This is a sculpture by Steve Croquet called Heads Up. It was one of the many sculptures on display in last year's Sculptures by the Sea. Every October the coastline between Bondi and Maroubra Beaches is decorated with numerous sculptures such as this one. I have previously uploaded a photo of the scultpure called Ship Of Fools here: Ship of Fools

Ciao cara Lisa,
Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona giornata,

More than a passing resemblance to the sculptures on Easter Island? A good composition with the two figures perfectly lined up ear to ear. They stand out well from the light toned background. Excellent rendering of the detail. Enjoy what is left of your weekend.

These guys look a bit fatter and happier than their Easter Island counterparts... maybe because they spend more of their time lounging on a sandy beach? Nice tight capture of the two of them, with the rusty color leaping out when set against the lighter tones of the sand and sky.
ricardomattos (5353) 2012-12-02 6:26
Very interesting these sculptures. I am curious of what materials were done, iron or wood? They seems to be floating over the sand as to be in the air.

Spectacular figures on the beach. I like the composition and the artistic effect. Well done!

Hi Lisa impressive close-up of the bouba head funny and well framed.Great rusty colours.

Hello Lisa - This shot is totally surreal. I find it hard to get my head round the strong presence of the sculptures on the natural landscape. They look so alien and incongruous. I like that and the way they challenge my visual 'memory bank' As to your composition and management - top class. The light has brought out the sculptural lines and volumes really well. The only small change that I might make (and its really minor) is to put a little space where the two sculptures meet. Fascinating shot and something to jangle my mind. Have a good week ahead. Rosemary

Those are class, and they make me smile. I think it might be because they look like such happy chappies themselves but the whole image works brilliantly. Composition is great to get two of them in, and the effect of the sand makes them look like they are floating. A cool weekend pic! Thanks for sharing.
All the best

Hi Lisa, I'm sure you see soem strange sights at Glamorama but these guys take the cake. Almost looks like the front bust has been superimposed from another image. Inclusion of the second one in the BG works well. Cheers, Steve

Ciao cara Lisa,
Yes, I remember the "Ship of Fools" and this is another splendid shot from the same place. Funny, though, when I saw the thumbnail, I immediately thought of Easter Island and wondered if you had done some sort of montage.
These two sculptures, presumably made from panels of rivetted steel, stand out fabulously against the white sand and pale blue sky. Your composition is excellent as well as dramatic, the light and exposure perfect, the colours vibrant and the details and sharpness exquisite.

An interesting inspiration of the easter Island statues.
thebest (4276) 2012-12-02 17:34
WOW!!! What Excellent clarity & sharpness - I am thinking that these sculptures are made out of tin or such & then painted with the rust coloured paints... The reason I think they could be very lightweight is that they are not sinking into the sand.
This is a well taken image ' CONGRATULATIONS Lisa '

Your POV is perfect for the illustration of these sculptures sitting in the beach landscape.

Ciao Lisa !!
Nice photo showing a fantastic sculpture.
In all probability it is a copy of the huge stone sculptures that you see in Eastern Island.... at least I can recognise the face !!!
I like the surface and colour of rusted steel.
now..... all he need to be happy is an ice-cream !!!

amazing sculptures and captured in such fine style. The detailing is wonderful and your composition makes them look so imposing and magnificent. Stunning image and very "Easter Islandish"
Have a great week - Brian.

Sort of Easter Island? People used to liken those to Malcolm Fraser back in the 70s. Could be a Rugby League player, though. Anyway, it's an eye-catching one, with the shadowy area around the eyes suggesting a mystery which isn't really there. Nicely composed within the limits of the portrait frame, getting them both in and leaving the all-important space on each side. Result looks great against the sand and pastel sky. I would have cloned out the bird, but I don't know why! Trust all is well with you 'up there'! Happy Xmas shopping time to you.
sevy (15367) 2012-12-03 4:34
I feel to be on Easter island with this shot: the shapes really look like similar.
Good you got a grey sky that day, it gave an interesting soft lightning, removing the shadow so that, at fist look I was thinking the statues were flying and not standing on the sand.
A kind of real surealist artwork.
kiks (11785) 2012-12-03 6:54
This sculptures make me think at the sculptures at the Easternislands!
You did a good choice of POV creating a very intersting effect. Lovely exposure work.

Molto interessante come luogo. Interessante anche la foto, oltretutto ben realizzata.

Sorry for missing some of your recents posts lately, guess i've been in a mini-TE slump. Most of my critiques lately have been just the 'paybacks'.
I had to laugh when i saw this one, I could have sworn you had not been to Easter Island yet! thats my next destination...i was wondering how the hell you beat me to it! haha
its even funnier when viewing this photo at first glance...something looks strange about it, like its been photoshopped and 'placed' onto the sand in post production...very strange and comical.
I like the variety of subjects you've been posting, keep it up!!
Gigidusud (18053) 2012-12-09 12:58
Impressionnante queste sculture, sembrano galleggiare sulla sabbia.Bellissimi contrasti di colori.
ikeharel (62945) 2012-12-10 1:46
Influenced by the spirit of the Easter-Island's, posted those impressive statues ashore, Lisa.
Good similarity by wood, and fine artwork upon.
Two in juxtaposition with the sea behind gave a fine DOF to the image.
mirosu (15302) 2012-12-10 3:08
You have made a good attempt here, choosing to go in tight on the wooden(?) sculptures. The composition works well in vertical format, and the focus with deep DOF draws the attention very well to both sculptures. Asymmetrical arrangement creates excellent balance and harmony.
Atousa (7131) 2012-12-11 3:54
Interesting sculptures on the beach!.. the framing n clarity of the shot are great; seems these heads are apart from the back ground!.. very well captured.. tfs
Best regards, Atousa

Hi,this is simply superb! It looks like a postcard from a different planet where Dali rules.First rate photo quality, all the best,Wolf.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-02-09 1:43
Ciao e buon fine settimana
