26 January is Australia Day, where we celebrate the European settlement of Australia. Many of our indigenous people, quite rightly see it as Invasion Day, although there are also many who view it as a day of reconciliation where we can work together for a better Australia.
This photo was taken at Darling Harbour on New Years Eve.

Nice work, good colors and a nice fireworks.
I like the idea, you are a very good photographer.

Spectacular image with wonderful colours and lots of atmosphere. The fireworks look like exotic flowers growing out of the water. Great idea to include the the spectators at the bottom with their camera's viewfinders showing miniature pictures of the main subject.

Of course, everybody is taking photos, Lisa, but most I see is with a cell phones.
Fireworks always exciting subject, stunning glow of red and orange.
Precise moment well collected.
Happy Australia night already...

Aaniin Lisa, Boozhoo?
And a hearty happy Australia day to you too! Its a day I feel happy to celebrate, as so many of my family have moved to your beautiful country and settled down to make new lives. In fact, were it not for Australia, I think Ireland would face some serious overcrowding problems these days!
Its a shame, although understandable that some see it as invasion day, but the thoughts of using the day to get on better together is a nice one. Love your post here, these fireworks are amazing and what makes this extra special for me is all the phones at the lower part of the screen. I love a picture in a picture, here we have a hundred pictures in a picture, brilliant! The screens have brought a real blaze of color into what would have otherwise been a dark part of the frame. Beautiful moment to capture.
I'm just disappointed Google translate doesn't feature a single aboriginal language, so I could wish you well in a local dialect :)
Best wishes from Ireland

A day for celebration or commiseration depending on your point of view then. Fantastic firework display as always in Sydney to celebrate the New Year. Paris dipped out this year, the mayor apparently said they would keep theirs for Bastille Day for enjoyment by the French rather than the tourists! Superb colours and clarity.

Wish you a Happy Australia Day as well! When the Indian cricket team tours Australia in summer, they generally spend 26th Jan over there, have heard TV commentators discussing how National days of both the countries are on the same day.
Here the picture is very symbolic of the day. I like the bright red fireworks lighting up the night sky but for me the star of the photo are the innumerable hands with mobile or compacts. It seems as if there is a rock concert going on and the audience is waving their hands with fluorescent sticks in their hand. Excellent capture, thanks for sharing.

Great capture with a perfect result, well framed with reflections and all these people, you don't alone to take photos ! funny view but I think that your shot is one of the most beautiful result.

Fireworks are always a nice subject, and these red ones really illuminate the harbor. I love all of the people at the bottom, holding up the cameras and taking a similar photo, except their views will not be exactly the same as yours, After all, you're capturing them, too. :-) Great exposure and sharpness. BTW, I hope your mom is feeling better, and is well on the way to recovery.

Bello scatto, molto...attuale.
Un abbraccio e un bacio a mamma

Bon Australia Day....avec un jour de retard!
Spectaculaire image aux tons rouges pour fêter l’événement.

Happy Australia Day! Our Canada Day is July 1st.
I'm sure many countries around the world have similar situations with their own indigenous peoples. Of course we do with our Native Indian population...I won't go into it as its still a HUGE political and social nightmare.
so funny to see everyone holding up their phones...nowadays EVERYONE is a photographer! :)
I wonder when in the future this will be viewed upon as 'outdated'. Its only a matter of time. With technology expanding so rapidly now, by the year 2020 or 2025 taking pictures like this with our phones will be like black and white TV. Just you wait and see.
love the strong oranges and reds, very fun :)
have a great one!

Belated good wishes for Australia Day Lisa! The highlight of this festive shot is, for me, the rows of people in the FG all with cell phones recording the event! Brilliant! No exif data here, what was your exposure? You have some lovely 'star-bursts' in the shot. Interesting to read the varying opinions on what exactly Australia Day means to people. Warm regards Rosemary

It´s like New Year´s Eve again:)
You know how to celebrate in Australia!
Magnificent composition and really superb quality of the image. But the most I like the fact you captured the people with their smartphones taking pictures of the fireworks-it looks fabulous!
My Best regards

Well captured Australian Day celebrations. I saw it last night (but from Melbourne) on TV, when our Stan took the Australian Open title (reason for big celebration in Switzerland but without this beautiful firework). Nicely done.
Congratulation to your Australia Day.
photoray (13981) 2014-01-27 6:59
I got a fine chuckle from the crowd holding up their cell phones to take photos of the fireworks.
And now (only in the US of A) we have someone who is in trouble for posting their video of having sex via their Google glasses.
....and attractive image with the fireworks exploding above the water ramps.

Belated Happy Australia Day! and a spectacular venue in itself....the fireworks were astounding and I very much enjoyed them. A real good ''explosive'' capture
making a big impact as the whole harbour river is lit up brightly. This photo really gives so much to the viewer to enjoy, indeed a superb lens work and your fine effort is well rewarded, Congrats.

Those smoke trails look almost solid and give a different look compared to usual fireworks shots. Excellent location giving good, and fairly close view. I don't think I've seen so many phone cameras pointing to same subject before.
Obviously it is a big day over there, I saw many signs giving info of the day on my visit. And I noticed that three of my visits to down under have been between New Year's Day and Australia Day. I guess I need to leave a bit later next time.

Ciao cara Lisa,

Ciao Lisa, I can understand that for indigenous people it was not happy day when Europeans arrived. But let's hope it will be a day for better future for all Australians. Great shot. I like all these fireworks and funny view of the row of people all making photos, mainly with phones. Excellent show of celebration. Best wishes for all my friends in Australia in this day.
Warm regrads Malgo
And for you mother a WS photo with hugs and the best wishes for good recovery.

beautiful firework display. I like the pattern which you have captured here with the traces of the fireworks well seen and the ends exploding with star-shaped bright lights. Red color adds a unique atmosphere and the people with cameras make a lovely foreground.
Royaldevon (39348) 2014-01-30 14:24
I didn't know you had an Australia Day.
I do know, however, that it is my son's birthday. He would have been very impressed had he been there to witness the fireworks. Oh, I see it is New Year's Eve! Never mind, it's still expressive of the event!(Incidentally, my husband's birthday is on July 4th, American Independence Day. You can imagine how chuffed he was, when we were there, and we were treated to a magnificent firework display!)
This is quite spectacular!
The fireworks are lighting up the whole scene with a warm, red glow. What I find particularly interesting is the number of people snapping with mobiles! Whatever did we do before mobiles were invented!
My warm regards,
mcmtanyel (23467) 2014-02-10 21:31
Happy Australia Day, belatedly! This is a lovely fireworks shot, congratulations on your steady hands and good timing. I like the inclusion of the sea of people taking photos (or videos) of the fireworks at the bottom of the frame.
