I'm posting this pretty much out of sheer stubborness to have some evidence of our first "waterfall hunting" day. we had just obtained a copy of a neat little book "New England Waterfalls" by Greg Parson and Kate B. Watson, and were full of enthusiasm go and find all 200 of the waterfalls mentioned in the book [we've seen 2 so far, if you're interested. I know, so much for enthusiasm].
these Gunn Brook Falls was the first place we visited. the light was difficult - dark shadows and brigh afternoon light hitting the water, so I did what I could. the photo is fairly dark, but I liked the contrast between the bright sunlit leaves in the background and cool shadows in the foreground, therefore the title - it really was chilly in the shadows.
zmey has this photo of the same place.
RAW, ISO 100, 16mm focal length, spot metering and auto white balance.

Hello Kristine, nice one. You and Kristaps have handled the dark light range well, and of course the silky water is always nice. Great capture.

I can smell the freshness. Really beautiful waterfall and place. You managed the light very well. Even shooting in the shadow, there is no overexposure on the highlight areas and I see details all over the image. Very nice effect on the water. Great job indeed!

You said: The light was difficult...
Isn't it what we suppose to look for ?
The world is stuffed beyond limits with the fotkas where the light was oh, so lovely (you know, the kind of the describe in the books for dummies )...
Your light conditions out there, were challenging your sensor and your skills as a photographer...
And... Just look at the results ...
Love it ! Immensely !
Hugs for both of you

Hi Kristine, what a nice photo. I love the water flowing like silk. Perfect exposure and composition.
How are you?

Hi, Kristine -
Nice peaceful photo of the same waterfall as Kristaps! And that's good light management, considering that such a slow shutter should have overexposed the sun splotches. Good job.
(I might have cut out that bit of greenery in the lower right corner, though; I'm finding it distracting.)
tomescuc (3291) 2008-08-12 10:33
Beautiful and peaceful scene, shown in a superb light and lovely natural tones. Superb work.
chpp (4281) 2008-08-12 11:04
excellent shot, perfect exposure, light and colours. the long shutter gives a nice effect on this little fall.

Excellent captured of this very charming and cozy water falls, versus the gigantic Niagula Falls. Great details and clarity even though most part of the falls and stream is in the shadow. Love the green forest backdrop nicely brighten by the light, providing a wonderful contrast to the warm earth tone of the foreground. The silk like water falls is so refreshing, one just want to dip in. A well worth post and very enjoyable. Thanks Kristine.

I enjoyed reading your note and..cm'on, only 198 waterfalls to get the job done :o)
Joke aside, I really like this picture and from my monitor it doesn't looks dark, as I can see details in the shadows. The whole lot is very well balanced with a beautiful taste of summer coming from the falling water. Here in Manchester the rain is pouring down with 12˚C..it's not summer but almost autumn..thanks for remind me that summer still exist somewhere :o(
Thanks for sharing it

The Emerald and the Amber has a great marriage in this waterfall with a sparkling Champagne accompany by the water.
and classical music goes through my ears.
Cheers my friend

You handled the harsh light wonderfully gaining lovely varying shades of lush green and golden browns.
Beautiful milky white slow exposure falls and razor sharp details makes for a beautiful sylvan image.

It's lovely! Absolutely amazing set of colours and light...of shadows and plants...Looks like a kind of mysterious forrest.
You really managed so well with difficult conditions.

Hello Kristine! It feels so good to be inside a forest, smell the wood and hear the water "falling". Your photo is a masterpiece, it really is, I mean I would be completely lost with the dark inside of a forest and I guess in my post you could either see nothing or overexposed but never would I ever get the mood that comes from a forest and you have, it is wonderful. Books ... I have my "black book" (with articles I cut out) with these cute little hotels, films or museums I want to see and sometimes it drives me crazy with all the ideas I have but your book made you visit two falls so far, okay out of 200 ... but it is a beginning ... BUT: first, as I understand, West-bound is on your schedule before you do your third ... enjoy! It is a wonderful area (although I have never been to that particular park but further up). I will think of you :) Barbara.

You perfectly made a success whit this capture of sunbeams between trees. This photo has a very beautiful atmosphere, she could illustrate a book of tales for children with fairies and elfs!
It is always a choice difficult to decide in which speed to take the water in movement. The slow speed allows a more poetic effect which goes very well with the place. Excellent choice!

Superb image !
Long exposure is great, and so are tones you caught.
Very good job,

Nice colors here. Ce paysage est vraiment très beau.

lovely exposure on the waterfall, light handled well considering the dark shadows and highlights. Nocely composed. TFS

Very nice exposition to capture the beautiful lights and, of course, the nice waterfalls. Well taken!

a big WOW!!! To get this image with this flawless light management takes a lot. You nailed it here and I just can't understand your first sentence of your note. Stubborness? Why? I wish I could have such an image in my collection!
zmey (7335) 2008-08-18 7:16
hey, there :)
beautiful! dreamy, glowing atmosphere. love the radiant greens and the serene fall. i like this wider angle, back-lit, half-falls version much better than mine.

Latvijā viens tāds aizsargājams ūdenskritums ļoti līdzīgi izskatās. A padomāju, ka Tēvu zeme :)
Pilnai laimei es pamācīu :) Man bi labo malu gribētos mazākk, bet kreiso veirāk, jo tur smukas gaismēnas uz dzelzs bagātās ūdens virsmas spēlējas.

Thanks for sharing this great, relaxing, natural, colourful, well done picture... with a good technical treatment and a great light management.
This is relaxing as chillout nature!! :)
Have a nice day.

Great chiaroscuro; it could be a Rembrandt with its theatrical use of light and shadow producing a composition of great drama & depth. The darkness allowed you to blur the interesting detail of the falls while still capturing the light on the leaves without overexposure. I really like this composition.
albertz (2468) 2008-08-20 4:58
Nice shot, your shutter speed is good enough to blur the water on the falls and freeze the surrounding elements, I also like the saturation of green here, a bit dark but beautiful. Well done.
AiresSantos (56155) 2008-08-28 8:16
Amazing tones and light in this marvellous composition. Excellent time exposure and details
It goes to my theme about waterfalls
steliosk (4802) 2008-09-25 16:37
Hello my dear Kristine, I'm back from vacations and work :D
this one is poetic as Kristaps, said, I love the sun element in your shot, however I'd choose a narrower POV to bring the water curtain closer. Nice warm feeling. I guess that you had in mind when you captured this.
Many Regards my friend
fulvio52 (8314) 2009-03-04 5:51
I thought first this one had managed to escape my attention, but I was actually in the US at the time you posted it. Never been a fan of long exposures, they usually turn water into a milky airbrush exercise, but what I see here looks just perfect. That's to say : on top of your outstanding light management. Wonderful shot, technically flawless and hugely atmospheric. Love it! Have a great day, I'll be seeing you. HUGS,
