Stakna Monastery or Gompa is situated on the right bank of the River Indus in Ladakh. The location is easily accessible by road with a distance of approximately 25 km from the town of Leh. The monastery was founded by Chosje Jamyang Palkar in 16th century, the great scholar saint of Bhutan. Stakna belongs to the Drugpa and has a number of monasteries attached to it, namely Mud and Kharu and those of Stakrimo, Bardan and Sani in Zanskar.
The name, 'Stakna' literally means 'tiger's nose'. The monastery was so named because it was built on a hill, which is shaped just like a tiger's nose.
The small but visually impressive Gompa crowns a rocky outcrop just 800m across the Indus, though the gompa’s winding access road adds another 900m.
The narrow suspension bridge in the FG is just wide enough for small taxi-vans..note the prayer flags which are tied on all the cables of the bridge. The River Indus flows below the bridge. Many may not know that the name 'India' has come from 'Indus'

Quel magnifique point de vue sur ce pont ainsi que cette structure qui se dresse au sommet de la colline. Je ne sais pas si je me sentirais le pied très sur avant de traverser, surtout que le courant semble très fort.

This is an exemplary composition where the tree and the pylon frame the view perfectly and provide a very good foreground. The general view is as breathtaking as always in your pictures from this part of India. The bridge doesn't look entirely safe, but maybe it is more sturdy than the immediate impression. Perhaps the prayer flags make it look a bit ramshackle.
It's an irony of modern history that most of Indus nowadays flows through Pakistan ;-).

The distance between the bridge and the monastery is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the architecture of the bridge. The quality of the light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Yes, I knew that the name 'India' was derived from 'Indus' :)
This is a spectacular sight with the suspension bridge and the monastery high on top of the hill.
Excellent framing of the view by the tall tree and the pillar of the bridge at the other side.
The many prayer flags hopefully ensure a safe crossing.
Best regards, Paul

Hi dear Angshu,
I didn't know that the name India came from Indus. Strange. Wonderful monastery on the hill but this is the hanging bridges that is so unusual. fascinating place so wonderfully presented.
Now you can post bigger photos. I am so excited with the new possibility!

Hello Angshuman. The photos from this region of the world are your true specialty. Each photo shows one aspect of this magnificent landscape, - refined through educational texts. Today's post also like it very much.

seems like a place too far from reality. seeing this photo made me go for a large india map to find the place, it really is far from anywhere :) then i made some studies on it, finding myself dreaming about a one month plan: fly to delhi, go to jodhpur and travel through jaipur, fatehpur sikri, agra, varanasi and stop at kolkota... well, sabya said something about simplifying the visa procedures between our two countries. why not then, and with a 5d? :))
is this the place on your t-shirt?

The bridge with all its prayer flags leading to the Gompa boost DOF tremendously. Good light management to produce vibrant colour hues with high sharpness. The blue-white contrast of the sky vs. the earthen tones is dynamic. Well done

The lights direction give a 3 D effect on this view

Lovely balanced composition with great lead-in with the bridge, river and each is telling its own story with great colours to top it off. The tiger's nose' really catches the eye backed by beautiful backdrop, indeed an excellent work from bottom to top of frame, I particularly love the contrasting colours between the fg, mid fg and the wonderful sky area. It's nicely done, quality shot as usual, TFS

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
this image have a high color power and a great sharpness.
With it you offers us a fantastic view on a splendid landscape, where the Monastery stands out elegantly over the hill, while the amazing suspension bridge in foreground leads our eyes towards the mountains and the blue sky.
The white clouds adds a high aesthetical quality into your composition.
A beautiful work.

A very good shot here. Takes me back to my trip in Nepal, I must have cross 20 bridges like this one during my hike there. Great POV showing the bridge leading into the monastary up on the hill and fiished off with the snowy peak in the distance and beautiful sky.
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2013-07-16 2:26
dear dada, A nice presentation here. I like the POV chosen to show such a numerous point of attractions. Like the white gompha at top under blue sky... Like the brown coloured mountain at middle and river at bottom. Like also the colours of prayer flags... Nice sharp details of the front pillar of the bridge... A good one indeed. Tfs.
