Photographer's Note

Here we have another example of the downtown streets of St. John's. My second upload of these colourful streets.

I hate having to say it, but there really is no colour saturation here. The colours you see are real, very vibrant and strong, and only enhanced by the bright sunlight hitting them. My girlfriend and I were astonished by how vibrant these houses were. Some of the colour choices are 'out there' to say the least, but for sure you'll know which house is yours!

There is strong pressure in the community to keep these older homes looking new and newer all the time, almost as if they're competing against one another to stand out the stongest. The homes were mostly built in the early 1800's to mid 1800's. The history of the distinct colours arrise years ago, from the fisherman using their leftover paint from their boats.

Its very difficult to photograph these homes as the streets are Very Hilly, creating odd angles and compositions. You can see i didn't include the street, thats because i didn't want the cars/trucks in the frame.

The other debate that i know will go on, is the included power lines in the top corner. Personally i like the power lines, and if you've ever been to these streets, the power lines are EVERYWHERE! They are so much apart of the atmosphere, so much apart of the charm, they are literaly connected to the homes in a crazy organized maze - its like a symbiotic relationship! You buy the home, you buy the power line.

Unmistakeable St. John's!
Have a great day
Craig
