Few years ago, when I seriously started to make pictures,
Spaarndam was one of my first locations.
Two years ago it was a disaster, There was
much building and many photogenic spots were
replaced by concrete.
Last week I was curious how it would look now.
"Not bad" was my mind, although I rarely shoot
The streetlight was still burning late that
morning and that gave a nice "old and warm
I chose this point of view, because I liked
the frozen stones on the forground (two
depth's) and I wanted not scare the Ducks.
Composition is extra wide open: I like the
movement of the sky and it makes the picture
About Spaardam: it's nearby Haarlem, IJmuiden
and 20 minutes from Amsterdam. The centre has
luckily not lost it's old charm (nice old and
little houses) and there is a nice little
harbour and pub :-).

There is a beautiful sleepy atmosphere.
The presence of a human figure walking away on the right side of the bank would give this picture the perfect touch, in my opinion.
JFS (32459) 2013-02-13 0:49

What a beautiful winter light, I like the water reflections that end by the freezing water. A very impressive and beautiful this show, impressed by the context that gives the perspective and the distinctive architecture. Quality work,

WoW! thanks for dedicating this image to me and of course Craig too! I am flattered and amazed to think I could be inspiring you. Your shots inspire me and this is a stunner! The POV and composition are so well chosen and the detailing wonderful, but it is the light management and reflections that just make this image so irresistible. Execution and presentation flawless as always. Thanks again.

Mooi foto werk, bedankt.
danos (94284) 2013-02-13 2:59
excellent the created presentation of this section of the city with lights to reflect perfect the clarity and the beauty of the buildings. I like the created perspective as the 'corner' foreground as making the image so charmy and unique.
Have a good day,Danos

Beautiful lights and colors. The line of stones made a perfect frame for the houses and lake. Great work, congratulations!
macondo (19263) 2013-02-13 4:09
A wonderful photo of this interesting scene, accompanied by an excellent note. I also like the formation of the rocks around the edge of the water. The buildings seem almost to be floating. Great light has been captured under the gloomy sky. Well done.

Kielia (24077) 2013-02-13 5:31
you are presenting a wonderful impression of this modern community!
Excellent management of the difficult light, very pleasant colors and an outstanding perspective. My compliments also for the nice notes!

adramad (43147) 2013-02-13 8:04
Wonderful composition, this time as magical night before, this curve perfect stone parapet in the foreground, the nine group homes but have height and harmony in design and are beautiful, especially the superb reflexes, with that gray sky as dramatic, gives a great charm to the composiicion.
Splendidly performed. I love it.
Have a nice day.

this photo makes me dwell on it for very long - it has been masterly managed in all terms. The locations provides striking view but the way you shot it counts the most. Excellent POV and composition - I especially like the way reddish grass contrasts with the frost covered stones. Amazing colors and light.
Congratulations on this stunning picture.

Excellent composition with this curve of snow covered stones and these pinsharp houses.
Perfect quality and natural colors.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-02-13 10:30
Ciao e buona serata

worldcitizen (8200) 2013-02-13 14:53
What a beautiful composition. The golden glow of the houses reflect perfectly in the water, and the cloudy sky is full of texture. I really like the way the rocks form a curved border in the foreground, too. Very nice! :-)
macjake (64714) 2013-02-13 18:15
I have only 1 critique left for today, and how fitting that I found this one!
what a great shot my friend! I'll have to scope this place out when i visit the Netherlands one day!
what a fantastic use of the wide angle, its for scenes like this what it really shines through.
the clouds really make an impact, just as strongly as the reflections and frost covered rocks.
its a beauty!!
Funny that I inspire you to shoot architecture, b/c you inspire me to shoot nature! :)

Breathtaking low light image with a lot of emotion going on. A very special picture the sense of "fisheye" is strong, yet I don't think you used an ultra wideangle lens for this The exposure control in the clouds and water is almost unbelievable with lots of intriguing elements. Good smoothness effect as usual. Another quality shot, Well done. TFS

Hello Robert - Who else could add beauty and romanticism to this collection of modern houses but you? Such an unpromising subject and yet you manage to enchant the viewer by means of your careful composition and elegant colours. The smooth reflections in the water and collection of dried plants rimming the stones add such a peaceful feel to the collection of homes. I wish I had the ability to work as delicately as you do. Have a lovely weekend. Rosemary
romanaa (7984) 2013-02-15 13:23
it is so beautiful and tranquil. The reflection has got wonderful framing with frozen rocks. I love the colour combination - grey, pink and terracotta - very fancy I would say.
BennyV (15903) 2013-02-16 6:21
Mooi en sfeervol werkje. Perfect getimed/belicht. The U-vorm speelt een mooie rol in de compositie. Proficiat!

Good morning Robert,
The curve on the artificial pond and the reflection collected made this photo so marvelous.
Perfect inclusive view on the edifices, mirror on calm water's, and fine clarity on.
Picture space well allocated, rule of third's.
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-02-17 5:40
I know the word "beautiful" is the biggest cliché I can write, but in this case it´s really first word coming to my mind. But apart from obvious beauty of this scene,I just love the mood you were able to create. It´s definitely one of the best "moody" photos I´ve seen lately.Excellently composed and in very good quality.
For me-first class!
Have a nice sunday
jcpix (13846) 2013-02-17 21:27
The wide composition has turned the seemingly ordinary into a a real stunning visual. The "U" shape created in this composition is like a big smile! :) Much in the way that Thomas Kinkade painted with light, I find your work to have that same quality with the subtle, soft tones. That being said, it's the frost/snow covered rocks that stand out to me on this one. That white contrasts so well against the rest of the image, but is perfectly exposed not to be overpowering in any way. Nicely done!
papagolf21 (95539) 2013-02-18 0:21
Bonsoir, cher Robert,

Very great composition, very ggod POV with deep foreground
I appreciate the good control of lights
kiks (11785) 2013-02-22 6:56
Erg mooi gedaan, Robert.
mkamionka (34615) 2013-02-24 8:50
It is a spectacular photo. I am speechless.
I like the rocky foreground subtly decorated with the snow. The rocks make a lovely turn in the foreground.. The view of the buildings is so clear and smooth and somehow contrasts with the rough rocks in the foreground. It seems so peaceful" The sky again contributes a more dynamic element so different from the serene view below.
Excellent work, one can learn so much from your photos,
elenimavrandoni (0) 2013-02-27 13:13
Tribute to two great photographers with an amazing picture as usual!!!
Combination, clarity, sharpness, color and contrast among with a fantastic light management compose an extraordinary image!
compliments and best regards,
vjmite (4216) 2013-03-01 3:42
The light on the buildings has transformed this into a magical view, assisted by the cloudy sky with a touch of pink on the right. A good idea to have the icy rocks in the foreground, framing the water and the buildings.
UlfE (14641) 2013-03-01 12:55
What is amazing with your photos is your exquisite sense of composition. I would not say you’re your image is completely in accordance with the rules of composition. However , these rules should be ignored sometimes. It is better just to trust your intuition. The place you have taken this photo is probably pretty ordinary, but your sense of light and composition makes it look absolutely stunning. TFS and have a nice weekend!
P.S. You asked me what kind of lens I have used for my 600mm photos. I was a 70-300mm/2,8 SIGMA lens+2 X converter.
Gigidusud (19921) 2013-03-15 13:20
Splendid photo with the village in BG with splendid light and nice colors.I like the frozen rocks on FG.Well done!Great dedicate too.

Congratulations, so lovely light capture, well with these reflections and nice frame with the curve in the Fg, Tfs.
Waylim (25488) 2013-03-21 17:52
You have always choosen the very special time to photograph, that is how dedicated you are to photography and to capture the special mood. I only take it when I was there as it is, Okay I get up early sometimes to get the moring shots. Even with the new buildings rising up, you still make wonderful photo of the area. I like your POV, to include the frosty stones in the foreground they frame the lake nicely and wonderful reflection of the buildings.

I salute you it is an amazing image - what can I say to you - Brian & many several others here on Trek Earth are such a credit to this site & it is a joy & pleasure for me & many others that we get to see this standard of photography - your images are outstanding.
Urs (14082) 2013-04-08 6:30
Your shot proves, that great photographs can be shot even when the weather and light are bad. The brightly light houses set an excellent contrast to the gray FG and BG
Longroute (19396) 2013-04-11 9:26
I'd call it: sugar and candies. The sugar is the snow on the rocks in foreground and the candies are the red and pink houses... good at the end of a supper with a bottle of red Porto wine... (:-)
Oh, my! I must go back to Holland and see this place, I really would like to live in one of those apartments near the water. I'd have my boat moored nearby...
Gorgeous reflections and lights here which contrasts so damn well with the dark sky. Your Mark II does a good job in these conditions and you as well! (:-)
You have a very good and definite style.

Trust you have settle in and enjoying being a father.
ourania (41246) 2013-05-15 13:07
a superb composition, that looks simple but is so well considered and so befitting to the view presented. I love the dual perspectives and they way they open up to allow the distant view stand out. They also seem to embrace it and the curve of the foreground is echoed by the reflection and the patterns in the sky. There's an effective dynamism that holds discreetly but tightly the composition together. The colours are exquisite, this image stands on the verge of reality and fairytale and its atmosphere feels timeless. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
bayno (18344) 2013-07-19 1:46
you have chosen a great POV for your shot, the curve of the shore of the pond seems to frame the complex of buildings, beautiful reflections and light, delicious shades and a surreal atmosphere...+

Hi Robert. The bottom part reminds me of a giant mouth with jutting teeth. It is a very creative POV. marvelous reflections which double the beautiful lights and the warm colours.Wonderful result. Regards. Klaudio.
