A short distance from Agra, lies the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, in Sikandra. Akbar who ruled over the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1605, began building his mausoleum in the spartan style of Timurid architecture. He started building this mausoleum that was to be a perfect blend of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist and Jain designs and motifs, bespeaking of his religious tolerance and secular views. However, he could not complete it and died. Thus, his son Jehangir completed his tomb, popularly known as Sikandra after Sikandra Lodi, who established the community where Akbar's Tomb is located. However, Jehangir made quite a number of alterations in the original plan, in keeping with the development of Mughal art and architecture. The tomb has three-storeyed red sandstone minarets displaying wondrous inlay work of marble on the four corners of the building.
The tomb is built in a pyramidal shape, with an open terrace covered with carved latticework screens. The actual grave is in the basement and is decorated with paintings in colorful golden, green and blue hues on the stucco walls. While the tomb is not magnificent in the manner of the Taj Mahal, it has a quiet dignity that befits this regal emperor.

What a superb atmosphere you kept with this backlighted picture. The silhouettes in the frame of the door are giving a human touch.
Well done my friend!

great idea. I like very much the pattern made by the entrance. The silouettes of the people also contribute to the mysterious atmosphere. The shape of the doors on the floor seems very attractive. I would probably just focus more tightly on theentyrance as for my taste there is a bit too much of the dark areas, but it is the matter of personal preference and I see you wanted to have some more asymmetry here.
Very well done, TFS

A nice play with the lights and shadows. Not an easy game here but you've managed it quite well
I like of course the lattice of the door, the presence of silhouettes at the entrance and the light on the ceiling of the doorway showing beautiful decoration
An intimist and delicate image
have a nice day
Best to you

The arch is framing well the lattice windows. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the lattice windows. Using the backlight, you are giving a special sensation to the place. have a nice day.

You have done an excellent work in the management of the exposure, in order to obtain a great balance between darkness and light, in a perfect cross-light shot.
The low luminosity does not prevent from estimating the beauty of this architecture and of its rich ornaments, skillfully caught.
I like the dynamism of the people and the choice of the off-centre framing.
It is an excellent photo, my friend.

Ah, this is a superb work which I have already commented elsewhere.... well it's always a pleasure to see it again and it deserves a place of honour here too!
A very well thought composition which exploits well the fine embroidery of this lattice gate to create a very atmospheric play of shades and light. A very elegant and intriguing image which stimulates our fantasy and satisfies our aesthetics. Hight technical quality and high expressive.

You have captured the mood well, superb indoor shot with fine detail with strong solid graphic quality. Impressive compostion and good crop. The warm light superbly contrasts with the shadow areas and the sunlight filtering in through the doorway is awesome revealing the beautiful geometrical patterns of the panel and the arch. The visitors complement well also as providing a good scale reference. The tone is excellent, sharpness and textures are fabulous. A piece of architectural beauty very well managed, Stunning shot my friend.

Amazinf capture of the mysterious atmosphere of this place.
Fine contrast and wonderful details of architecture of entrance.
Fine game of light with shadows.

Another beautiful image of this fantastic place. As always, a great place to capture the interesting shadow and beautiful pattern and design of the window. Perhaps it's the black frame and the rather dark to black ceiling, it feels as if there is too much negative space and the angle of the lens distortion makes the window and arch leaning toward the front and tilted. Otherwise it is really good technical quality, I like the play of light and shadow and all the texture and detail of the arch.
Thanks and have a good day.

Asadharon chhobi, dada.

Another classic from the magnificent lattice architecture of the mughals! I like the perfect silhouetting and the incredible light. Also, the use of the solitary figure in the doorway is excellent for scale comparison. But I wish the left part of the archway were in the frame - its omission leaves the viewer wanting to complete the frame. Apart from that - excellent shot!
An aside: I wonder what an HDR would look in this situation. Of course you wouldn't have the beauty of a silhouette photograph, but the interior detail would be strong. Of course there's the problem of using tripods and ghosting of moving people. Also, it's often hard to control the fringing that would result from the lattice.
Nard (6972) 2011-02-15 11:43
I like the framing showing the size of the door and the dark backlight, quiet atmosphere, black silhouettes and golden colors. Well done

Hello Mr. B,
The lacework created by the traceries comprise a beautifully varied array of mathematical mosaics. From the composition to the final result this is a very successful photograph, framed in a simple but tasteful frame. Of course, the note is always a pleasure to read.
Warm regards, Mr. B,

Hi Angshuman, Although this is a dark photo, I like the light coming in these beautiful windows, it allows the detail to shine through & also the man to remain in silhouette, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Angshu,I love the contrasts of the dark inside tomb and the trees outside. The grill work is especially nice, but more important is your note. I know very little of India and much of the world and have found TE to be a tremendous resource, especially when the photos are accompanied by notes as informative as yours. Thanks for sharing.
