Photographer's Note

This is one corner in Shinjuku Golden Gai. Shinjuku Golden Gai is a bar/snack district in 1-chome, Kabukichō, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. Hanazono shrine was adjoined and the store of the wooden terraced house built at the postwar years is located in a line like a matchbox across the narrow alley. Here also are known well as the place in which the movie and the theater persons concerned, the writer, and the journalist gather mostly. In early times of postwar, the black market which suited the Shinjuku Station east gate from the first is a cause. It has transferred to this place that was the land along a Tokyo streetcar those days as substitute land at the time of Tokyo removing the black market in front of a station around 1950. Inside of bar/snack is as narrow as 10 m2 - 15 m2, and if several customers are sitting in a line with a counter, it will become no vacancy. In this area of about 50 m2, the bar and snacks of 200 or more are still crowding and do business. This photograph was taken around 4:00 p.m. before the business of a store.
