15 km to the south of Leh on the Leh-Manali highway is the Shey Palace. Located in the same complex is the simple, but beautiful & a very important Shey Monastery or Gompa. The buildings are placed on a ridge similar to a knife edge and the approach to the monastery is decorated with many stupas and shrines.
Shey used to be the capital and the home for Ladakh's royal family up until the Dogra conquests forced the royal family to be stripped of their power and move to Stok. In 1655, in memory of his father, King Deldan Namgyal built the two-storey Gompa or monastery, adjacent to the palace. He installed a two-storey high image of the seated Buddha. After entering the central courtyard located on the second storey of the gompa, the 12-meter high image of the Buddha is found in the room to one's right. The Buddha is worked of copper sheets gilded with gold. This is the biggest metal statue in the region and was the largest Buddha statue of any type in Ladakh until Thiksey installed a 15-meter tall Buddha made of clay in 1970.
Shey Monastery today is managed by Buddhists Monks from Hemis Monastery. Lhachen Palgyigon, the first King of Ladakh built this Monastery.
It was evening when we reached Shey. As we approached the monastery, the late light shone on the Crown of the stupa – the 13 Metal Discs (which signify the 10 mystical powers of Buddha & the 3 Essential remembrances – Past, present & future). The entrance to the Gompa or Monastery past the small flight of stairs is to the right, inside which sits a giant 2 storey tall statue of Sakyamuni Buddha.
For those who might be interested, in the Workshop a detailed explanation of the parts of a Stupa & their significances

Hello Angshuman ,
Despite of the difficult light conditions , you've perfectly presented this interesting place in a very well balanced composition . The plastic chair seems to be the only modern element in the scene .

Looks similar to Nepal. Good shadow detail with excellent colour & saturation. Impeccable sharpness with good warm cold color contrasts between the blue sky & red rooftops & coverings. Tfs!

The light was difficult but the stupa is well detailed and it is anyway the unchallenged focus of this place. The courtyard looks a bit scruffy so it may be just as well that the shade has left it rather dark. On the other hand there is a beautiful glow of the red and pink wall to the left. You also provided us with a remarkably informative workshop. Thanks.

Hello Dear Angshuman-san!
The quality of the lighting in the image is sparkling, and the air seems to be so clean. This photo not only captured the subject mentioned in your wonderful note, but it shows us the quality of the air surrounding the structure mentioned in your note. I wonder what the altitude of this particular spot is like. The colours of the sky suggest that the stupa is found at an altitude already reaching quite a high elevation. The photo has this quality of the air not available at the lower altitudes (?). The sunlight sheering through the image is quite dramatic and the stupa stands there majestically. Here once again we are presented with stunning image quality. The colours are not too outspoken. And the mountain range appearing over the roofline is an absolute delight. I must say this again; the lighting and the air in this image are so overwhelming.
With my very best and kind regards,
Have a pleasant Sunday evening, Angshuman-san

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
the low luminosity gives a strong personality to this image, with a balanced-well exposure, and the perfectly polarized sky creates a chromatic very interesting contrast, which adds a high aesthetic level to the composition.
I like this stupa and the elements of the traditional architecture of the monastery.
A beautiful work.
aliabazari (16053) 2012-03-13 11:47

The light is not easy here, most of the foreground is in the shadow but you did well with the exposure and not over exposing the background. Good photo quality and beautiful details and colors.
I hope you enjoy your vacation in Thailand.
