This tiny hamlet sits about 385 meters above sea level, and looks down over the villages of the Cinque Terre; indeed it is located within the National Park of Cinque Terre and is part of the village of Vernazza. It is best known for its church, called the Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Grazie (Shrine of Our Lady of Grace), part of a pilgrimage trail. This photograph was made from the village of Corniglia. Looking inland, we saw this frightening cloudscape approaching. Turning round and looking seawards, we had blue sky and bright sun. So though I took a quick snap of the storm we spent most of the time looking out to sea!

Hello Will ,
What a great discovery when I open the thumbnail ! I was attracted by the superb stormy sky over the green mountains . But the view of the village is a fantastic bonus .

Beautiful view of this town against the storms, and especially so that the light has managed to avoid the cloud cover and illuminate the town and mountain so nicely. The clouds look like crashing waves!

nice the view of the place with the cloudy sky over the area to make the image so charmy and unique.I like the beautiful presentation as light as falling on the village on the hill.

Hello, good timing capturing that big cloud over the mountains. Excellent exposure and composition.
When I saw the title of your image I had to look because we have a San Bernardino here in California too.

Very impressive. The sky looks like a vulcano outburst.

Excellent photo of this scenic view.
Great colors and clarity. Detailing on the brooding sky is excellent. The hamlet looks very pretty in the sunlight that is breaking through the cloud. I like the shadow and light patterns on the mountain. I am wondering what a great view one can enjoy from those houses.
A splendid photo and thanks for sharing.

A great stormy sky for a great image ;) I like the strong viewpoint of the village very well lightened by the "before storm" light
Excellent texture in the clouds
Very well done

I love moody skies and this certainly does it for me!
The upwards viewpoint ensures that we see the contrasts between the firm curves of the hillside and the ethereal, fluid lines of the clouds. There is a tangible sense of foreboding.
Have a lovely Sunday,

Approaching Storm, that's God's gift Will, just waiting to be captured by keen photographers!!
Fantastic shot I would be proud of this shot too it is really dramatic and extremely well composed with the break in the brewing cloud in exactly the right spot
You've caught the atmosphere so very well "ominous" seems the best description. Quality shot flawlessly taken, Congrats

This is a remarkable photograph which owes its impact and beauty to the remarkable light. You describe the events very well in your note and those dark clouds, which look foreboding of an approaching storm, make a fabulous backdrop to the brightly lit houses and church of San Bernardino perched atop the mountainside.
Gorgeous light and colours, a fabulously characterful sky, a pleasing composition, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity best seen, of course, at the full size of 1200x800 pixels.
A remarkable picture and I'd really love to know just how much processing work this one required - it might be virtually nothing but, on the other hand, this might have required quite a lot?

Great dramatic sky with a very interesting spot sunlight on the village
mkamionka (39093) 2013-12-24 13:12
beautiful effect with these almost black and white clouds above the green hill. I admire the exposition, you have really captured the subtle features of the clouds without overexposing anything. The white cloud in between the dark ones is literally and figuratively a highlight.
You have perfectly used the opportunity here.
Have a happy Christmas time!

This is a very cool, I mean the sky is very dramatic, I might be running for cover instead of taking picture. I was once in weather like this up on the mountain and I was still taking picture and suddenly there was a supper loud thunder so close it scare the out of me. So when I see this, I run for cover. Though there were still some light coming from the opposite side illuminated the mountain nicely. A good contrast to the dark sky. Love the little patch of white cloud drawing us in. Excellent quality shot with good details and well managed light. Thanks Will.
