This "Pound Paradise" is housed in the former butchery department of the Pendleton Cooperative Industrial Society building. It is a listed building , described as "mixed classical and Art and Crafts style". It has red brick with glazed brick and yellow and green faience dressings. "Faience" is not a word I have come across before and my Collins English Dictionary definition says "a tin glazed earthenware, usually that of French, German or Italien origin".
This particular building is very familar to me as I grew up in the area. I thought to post this after seeing TE member "Royaldevon"'s photo taken at Salford Quays. Salford Quays ( where the BBC is now based) is the rejuvenated, modernised Salford. This is the old.You can read more about The Cooperative Society's history here and there's plenty on wikipedia.
PS The lad caught in shot crossed the road and asked if I had him in the frame. He said he thought I should be paying him for the privilege. Typically sparky Salford kid!

Beautiful colors! The reflection of the sky on the window glass is interesting.

A nice image of this building Bev.
A good note too. It seems ironic that a once proud civic building, listed for historical reasons and given the emergence of the Co-operative societies back in the day, should be a pound paradise shop?! That shop frontage seems at odds with the slightly ostentatious style of the rest of the building.
As for the lad... typical of today's arrogant, narcissistic generation... we were never cocky like that! Ha ha.

Excellent image of this ornate English building. I love seeing places like this when touring around the UK. The image is full of colour, architectural angles and texture which combine to make a scene which is very appealing.

Hello Bev - A Pound Shop in a million pound building. What a fabulous and colourful piece of architecture, I would love to see this in the flesh. The detail looks so superb and I am a fan of the Arts and Craft Movement. Perfect sunny weather allows this beauty to show off all the glorious colours. Super, a shot to really enjoy. Warm regards rosemary

a lovely tightly framed picture that focuses on the intriguing architectural style of the old building which surely is a special point of reference in its area. I like very much the perspective and the sharp rendering of details regarding its style and current use. The excellent light, colours and contrast management makes the picture very attractive. For me the atmosphere is melancholic and alluring. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

This is a stunning shot and you have also provided a very interesting and informative note. Your note, in fact, takes me back in time and I can well remember my Mum talking of her "Divi" - a percentage of your expenses which you got back from the Co-op on your purchases. And "faience" is yet another new word which I shall have to try to remember!
A beautifully composed picture with wonderfully vibrant colours, strong contrasts from the quite strong sunlight, perfect exposure and exquisite detail and sharpness.

How strange that this magnificent building is now a pound shop. Anyway the green banners and red and yellow doors add even more colour. The boy in red adds human interest to an otherwise deserted street. Stunningly sharp and very well presented.
Kind Regards, Ann
