Ponte Sant'Angelo, once the Aelian Bridge or Pons Aelius, meaning the Bridge of Hadrian, is a Roman bridge in Rome, Italy, completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian, to span the Tiber, from the city center to his newly constructed mausoleum, now the towering Castel Sant'Angelo. The bridge is faced with travertine marble and spans the Tiber with three arches; it was approached by means of ramp from the river. The bridge is now solely pedestrian, and provides a photogenic vista of the Castel Sant'Angelo. It links the rioni of Ponte (which was named after the bridge itself), and Borgo.
In times past, pilgrims used this bridge to reach St Peter's Basilica, hence it was known also with the name of "bridge of Saint Peter" (pons Sancti Petri). In the seventh century, under Pope Gregory I, both the castle and the bridge took on the name Sant'Angelo, explained by a legend that an angel appeared on the roof of the castle to announce the end of the plague. During the 1450 jubilee, balustrades of the bridge yielded, due to the great crowds of the pilgrims, and many drowned in the river. In response, some houses at the head of the bridge as well as a Roman triumphal arch were pulled down in order to widen the route for pilgrims.
For centuries after the 16th century, the bridge was used to expose the bodies of the executed. In 1535, Pope Clement VII allocated the toll income of the bridge to erecting the statues of the apostles saint Peter and Saint Paul to which subsequently the four evangelists and the patriarchs were added to other representing statues Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. In 1669 Pope Clement IX commissioned replacements for the aging stucco angels by Raffaello da Montelupo, commissioned by Paul III. Bernini's program, one of his last large projects, called for ten angels holding instruments of the Passion: he personally only finished the two originals of the Angels with the Superscription "I.N.R.I." and with the Crown of Thorns, but these were kept by Clement IX for his own pleasure. They are now in the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, also in Rome.
List of angels
1. Angel with the Column (Throne) (Antonio Raggi, inscription "Tronus meus in columna").
2. Angel with the Whips (Lazzaro Morelli, inscription "In flagella paratus sum").
3. Angel with the Crown of Thorns (Bernini and son Paolo, now in church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte. Copy on the bridge by Paolo Naldini (inscription "In aerumna mea dum configitur spina").
4. Angel with the Sudarium (Veronica’s Veil) (Cosimo Fancelli, Respice faciem Christi tui).
5. Angel with the Garment and Dice (Paolo Naldini, inscription "super vestimentum meum miserunt sortem").
6. Angel with the Nail (Girolamo Lucenti, inscription "Aspicient ad me quem confixerunt").
7. Angel with the Cross (Ercole Ferrata, registration "Cuius principatus super humerum eius").
8. Angel with the Superscription (Copy by Giulio Cartari (inscription "Regnavit a ligno deus").
9. Angel with the Sponge (with vinegar) (Antonio Giorgetti, inscription "Potaverunt me aceto").
10. Angel with the Lance (Domenico Guidi, inscription "Vulnerasti cor meum").
Of the statues on bridge prior to Bernini's update, only those of the two apostles, Saint Peter and Paul, remain.

Complimenti e buonanotte,Luciano

I know this place and the spot this photo was taken from ... well done for position and dimension. Great lighting!

The photograph and the complementary note comprise an excellent package for Trekearth, and indeed in the very spirit of the organization, "Learning geography through photography." As many times as I have visited Rome, and the Castel St. Angelo, I had never known of the history of the bridge itself, that it dated back to the Romans and not to Medieval times.

place I love so much in Rome and really inexhaustible subject for photographers(I think you´ll agree with me
it´s one of the most beautiful bridges in the world).
I like your presentation and above all POV,which creates here 3D effect to the scene(excellent idea to frame the FG like this).
Another beautiful and creative contribution to Rome´s gallery on TE!
Wish You all the best

A well constructed composition using the bridge to create a fine perspective. The eyes move naturally from right to left across the frame taking in the detail in the stonework and the succeeding statues. The light is very appealing and the colours and textures well rendered. Thanks also for the interesting and informative note.

a piece of historic architectural beauty and captured exquisitely. Elegant lines and curves and a light that enhances the majesty of this crossing so expressively. Glorious imagery!

Hello Romano - You note explains the history and details of the bridge very well and it is quite a shock to read that the bodies of those executed were displayed here for passers by to see! I'm pleased that the tradition is now only a historical one. Good light across the stonework reveals the detail very well. A super presentation both note and image. Warm regards Rosemary

Ciao Caro Romano,
You have supplied interesting notes with this fine photograph. In the U.K., we like information about Emperor Hadrian, for he left a great monument in our country, Hadrian's Wall, which divides England and Scotland.
Your shot is expertly composed, the arch of the bridge emerging from the bottom, r/h corner and traversing to a strong vanishing point. The texture of the stone and the details of the sculptures are sharply captured.
I have never visited Rome but feel I know so much via your photographs.
My warm regards,

The diagonal alignment of the bridge adds good dynamism. The ornately decorated statues and arches add fantastic repetition. Well composed using the rule of thirds withe the skyline placed well off center. Good reflections in the Tiber. Tfs!

Molto ben fatto.
Have a nice day.

This is a very fine composition with the lovely bridge taking my eye across the river. The exposure and sharpness are excellent.
I might have cropped a little off the sky to make the bridge even more dramatic but it is nevertheless a first class image - very well done and TFS.
Kind Regards, Ann

This is such a great subject for this treatment, especially when it's done this good. A well balanced composition with wonderful detail and tones which suit this treatment so well. I love all the curves in this - the curves of the arches of the bridge smoothly lead us round to the other buildings in the backdrop. A fantastic shot with timeless quality and mood of a classic shot and brilliant interesting narrative. Well done, Congrats.

Fine angled view of the famous Emperor Hadrian bridge, traditional stone arched and impressive even without the angel statues. And the distant hilltop buildings add to the scene.
Plus a bonus with your excellent historical note/information.

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,

Even though it was long ago I was here, but I remember this bridge well. Beautiful photo showing the profile of the bridge in an angle that give lots of depth and perspective. Wonderful detials of the texture of the stone and the statue in good sharpness and detials.

Ciao caro Romano
Nitidissima l'immagine, ottimo lavoro.
Un caro abbraccio

beautiful bridge, I had a pleasure to see it in person a long time ago. Great capture here: usually people show this bridge in the context of the castle or Vatican but the bridge is so attractive that it deserves a separate presentation being in the centre of the interest.
You have captured it in a fantastic light, we can appreciate all the details and it feels also almost three dimensional.
Beautiful work, pleasure to watch it,
Have a great weekend,
npecanhuk (66238) 2013-09-28 6:59
I really like this one here too!
I love the details of that bridge and those of that sky as well!
Exposure, chosen pov and composition are highlights here!

This is for sure one of the most beautiful places in Rome due to a fantastic design and sculptures of the bridge. Also, a view from the bridge on the Vatican is amazing so I'm sure it must be one of your favorites as well.
Like the selected POV here and fantastic level of details achieved due to great light conditions and good sharpness. Excellent subject as well as presentation. TFS.
