Port Nolloth is a typical west coast town where life is lived at a slow pace and the population is comprised of a rich assortment of characters. Walking down the road I came across this couple sitting outside their home.
What today is essentially a fishing village, Port Nolloth lies on the bay known by the indigenous Namaqua people as Aukwatowa (where the water took away the old man) - it was the last landfall the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias sighted, before he and his ship were blown off course and out to sea for thirteen days.
The village lies 144 kilometres northwest of Springbok, and 90 kilometres west of Steinkopf. Port Nolloth started its life as a railway junction for the copper-mining industry, and subsequently as the site for diamond mining, but today serves mainly as a fishing village for the crayfishing industry (or rock lobster), and for small-scale diamond recovery; large-scale shipping came to an end as diamond discoveries have gradually declined in the area.

This is a sight that one sees all over the world, though reading your notes it appears that this couple and their dog at least have a home to retire to. A rather melancholy and despairing image despite the fine technical presentation.

a superb technical image of a pretty desperate situation, the direct look of the man being in complete contrast to the ladies averted gaze along with the sleeping dog in shabby surroundings add up to fine if rather melancholic photograph.
It has real appeal for me and as I much prefer images that tell a story, it will take it`s place in my favourites.
Warm regards Les.

Hello Rosemary. A beautiful corner to rest for man and dog. What an interesting photo. The scribbled wall is a wonderful addition. My compliments for this timeless study.

Tous mes compliments,

I have rarely seen total boredom so perfectly captured, but the photo is as far from boring as possible. it's full of fascinating details, including the green wall where "Nikky" and others have left their messages. The man and his wife and their dog are all perfectly placed and are all perfectly natural. There is nothing artificial in this brilliant photo, which is also technically impeccable.
PS I just remembered I had used the same title myself. For some pictures the titles come quite naturally.

A perfect corner to capture this couple who do not look very happy. The scribbled names, the damp wall all add to the mood of the photo. It is good that they at least have each other for comfort. Excellent capture of the couple lost in their thoughts. Nice DL shot.
Thanks for sharing.

This is a great candid scene. I could be way off the mark here, but something about these people make me feel unhappy. Not unhappy to see them, but to share an unhappiness that they seem to have inside them. The woman looks distraught, like so many, too many people that we see on the news around the world, and she looks as if she has just suffered some terrible loss. The mans hand is gentle on her shoulder, and seems to be offering comfort but in an awkward way and not quite sure what to do and say kind of way. Its a powerful shot, enhanced by both the carved words on the wall, and the leisurely carefree pose of the dog.
Nicely done. As always, a pleasure to view your gallery.
Best wishes from the emerald isle.

Did you ask their permission or just grab the shot? I ask as I'm often confronted by such situations and never know quite how to approach them. Being somewhat shy doesn't help either! Asking makes a lot of sense, but then they may refuse, and if they agree, they know you're there and tend to pose. In this case, they look entirely natural, even if the man is looking straight at you. The dog of course is the star...

It looks like a lazy afternoon there. Maybe these people have nothing to do or just relaxing? Very nice composition with this greeen wall and sleeping dog. Nicely done.
Have a nice day.
I have read you go to Italy in May. I am sure you will have a great time. Craig goes to Turkey, Sergion to Rome, a time for intercontinental travels :). I go only to Spain..

mirosu (16273) 2014-03-12 1:24
I like this photo, excellent snapshot showing couple and the dog recovering after, maybe long hot day. The light is excellent, colors superb. You have captured it from excellent viewpoint.
Very well done.

truly magnificent picture and fantastic study of human faces and attitude.
It´s great to see that they both have quite different attitude(maybe it´s because she doesn´t want to be photographed and he finds it ok?)Anyway this contradition in their facial expressions is great. And also the dog has its own life philosophy:)and takes your action very easy:)
And last thing I have to mention and which I find great-the scratched wall as a backdrop-for me superb!
Have a nice day

like this! It is a beautifully constructed portrait study, with so much character and a real sense of the love and homely feel obviously evident here. Stunning clarity and a first class presentation.

a lazy moment from everyday life is here. The dog is there lying idly... The couple, sitting beside road with vacant-eye-expression... Seems, they just stop doing everything... The old colours of the wall behind nicely accompanied the rest. Nicely spotted and masterfully presented. Superb work. Tfs.
dekanski (6010) 2014-03-12 6:03
... and lying!
Great "little" photo!
rbassin (24313) 2014-03-12 10:49
ktanska (29241) 2014-03-12 12:28
A superb portrait of brutal realism. They have nothing much to do I guess. Excellent framing giving also room on those scribblings on the green wall.

Great people & daily life photograph, with special regards to the level of sharpness, exposure, vertical format and composition!

Photographically excellent, looks like a picture of despair, to a certain extent your note talks about it. Wish and hope for their best.

A raw daily life shot
Just a natural situation with natural postures and attitudes, in a natural environment
A pleasant shot and a testimony along with the accompanying note
best regards, have a nice evening

This brings back so many memories of a place similar to this area in Waterfalls, Rhodesia.
You have captured this image so well, as we can see these guys on their stoop relaxing in the sun.
I love the stare from them as to what you are doing, especially the lady with her one beady right eye sussing you out.
Brilliant, well done, a great one for Street Photography.

An evident common aura encircles this touching trio of whom members appear quite confident in each-others.
Thanks for the rigorous verticals in this moving scenery.

A picture that is taken from a great
point of view (lower position) and
that makes the picture extra personal
Picture has a great light managent
and composition and it's timeless.

this photo tells a story and it is a sad one. For me this is a classic TE image. Photographs should tell stories about people and the world we live in. I also like your courage in asking to take this photograph and for having the composure, despite your sadness at this couple's condition, to take one that is well composed and with good technical values. This goes to my faves too.
ps I read your reply to Will with interest. I like people photography best of all but it isn't an easy thing to do.

Time really seems to pass slow here. I like this portrait a lot, the calm poses of the couple, the dog sleeping, the letters on the green wall, the red line at the top, the curtains... everything seems to add a lot to make it a great shot, even the plate on the ground.
jmdias (68615) 2014-06-13 1:49
I its an impressive portrait, the couple and the sleeping dog are well presented and I liked the visual effect of the letters carved in the walls. the woman looks like desolate while the man think your interest by them is fun. congratulations.
