This is from the city of Pontianak near the west coast of Borneo, just by the Equator. I took this photo in 1976 and scanned the original Kodachrome slide a few years ago. Now I have just cropped it and adjusted the colours.
Pontianak lies on a river and is criss-crossed by a number of canals. After nearly 36 years I still remember it as the ultimate tropical city, hot and humid and full of insects and strange smells. It was also very much off the tourist track. Bureaucratic problems and a mean security official forced me to stay one week longer than I had intended (the only time I have been refused to leave a country) and during my stay in Pontianak I don't think I saw even one other tourist.
Here you can see another picture from Pontianak I had uploaded earlier, and here is another one.

I like how you placed the little girl on the scene, in a perfect position!
The scene is very pleasant and rich of beautiful colors, and there's a marvelous light too, the quality is excellent by my taste, I like this kind of PP.
Congratulations and TFS, have a nice WE.

I think that the colors and the texture are a little bit harsh, but as it's a scan of a very old picture, this is not too bad.The little gil is very well placed, and I like the perspective on the numerous bridge.Very interesting to see such a scene!

After 36 years but still going strong, your picture I mean. This time from the land of thousand rivers, i rememer the similar situation in south kalimantan 3 years ago. It's quiet an experience really, This rickety wooden bridge has the unique appearence and charm to it but functional serving the local communties, at glance I thought that this is somewhere in Thailand together with the colorful tradional boats makes this a quite exotic spot for photo with local taste. The curious innocent girl, now must a grand ma- is a great draw as strong main subject to livens this image and your point of sharpest focus is spot on with crisp detail and great control of dof with good hint in the background as she provides the stark contrast. The result is a joy to view, Well done another classic stuff from your achive. Congrats, TFS
Have a great week end, Cheers!

Hello dear Gert,
Again a perfect "oldie". Nowadays she must be around her late fourties.
Very good pov and nice bright colors. Perfect scan.
TFS and have a nice weekend

The girl's red dress makes her the definite centre of interest. The repeating bridge decks disappearing into the distance make for some great depth. Lovely!

I never cease to be amazed at the number of wonderful photos that you ahve in your magic treasure chest. Here's another! I like this a lot as well as the other you have provided links to. This one has a painterly quality provided by the dof. This set of photos as so very interetsing and I can't tell you how much I envy you your travels.

I just took a gander at the canal in Pontianak. The young child, perhaps 6-8 years old here, would be 42-44 years old now. There is an expression in Turkish, "the King of his chair." That is an appropriate description of bureaucratic officials who can make your day, or ruin your day by their whims. Their decisions can be entirely random, but they are the absolute rulers of their tiny domains.
Warm regards and have a good Sunday,
agjika (3616) 2012-05-13 1:21
Isn't she confident! I would probably have wobbly knees if I stood on it! Fantastic composition with the girld on the right. The fact that she is not looking towards you and the boy working on the left make this a super candid photo. I also like the dof effects on those bridges behind the girl as well as the light and shadows under the bridge. I assume you were in the boat. I saw the flowating market as well, very remarkable. I am very jealous of what you have seen!!

This girl is well positioned in the picture, her left leg is elongated through a rope and a shadow on the little log bridge. All these bridges create a very good pattern as a backdrop. Furthermore, she is dressed in very eye-catching red clothes!
PS Vi åker till Oslo tidigt i morgon

Lepo secanje ...
Lepa fotografija, boje i panorama.
Mnogo je godina proslo kako li sada izgleda mesti i ova devojcica.
Imajte lep i uspesan dan, sve najbolje sa lepim secanjem na 1976. godinu.
Nice memories ...
Beautiful photography, color and panorama.
Many years passed as it now looks like this girl and sweep.
Have a nice and successful day, all the best with a nice memory of the 1976th year.

It's always great to see your old photo's from all around the world with there typical colours.
This is a great one with such an interesting background.

Hello dear Gert
Excellent, vintage shoot.Very wonderful expression of the child.Superb POV and colors.Well done!
tyro (21114) 2012-05-14 12:32
This girl looks quite content on the little bridge and doesn't appear to be too worried about its safety. The woman and her children in the second photograph to which you have added a link look extremely happy and friendly too - just a pity you were faced with mean officialdom by security people when you were here - that must have left some unpleasant memories of the place.
A fine photograph with lots of interest and some lovely colours. Very good for a scan from a colour slide and excellent sharpness too.
adores (39209) 2012-05-14 17:29
You were really lucky to see these places without tourists! I wonder how it is now! This type of dresses were also popular here by that time. I like her pose and the composition. It's a very good portrait, with a great background!
bayno (18344) 2012-05-14 22:37
The square cut here works very well, great framing, wonderful light and well-saturated colors, I also like the use of DOF, a fascinating shot ... maybe you were one of these rickety walkways when you took the shot ;)
have a good day...
emka (82572) 2012-05-14 23:57
The girl from the photo must be over forty now. beautiful view of these small bridges. To stay longer in this city was maybe not a bad idea at all (but not pleasant to be forced). To observe life so different than ours and real, with no turists, is fascinating. As usual, fantastic quality after so many years.
kato (11630) 2012-05-15 0:35
You're capturing well this local spots by a good composition and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see many bridges built over the canal. It's impressive in the spectacle in which children are playing at the water's edge , too. And, a girl standing on the bride and wearing clothes of red/white gives a strong impact in this image.
Have a nice day.
Royaldevon (31791) 2012-05-15 2:28
Good Morning Gert,
You have cropped the shot to perfection. The little girl is very well positioned. Your use of narrow dof gives her focal attention and supplies a most interesting context wihout being obtrusive.
Have a lovely day,
eldancer1 (30034) 2012-05-15 10:23
Do you ever wonder what happened to this cute little girl? Nicely captured with good pov and good framing. The scan maintained some of the good colors. Very well done, tfs.

another interesting documental photo from Your archive. Nice portrait of girl. Fine sharpness and saturated colours. Good note, scan and photowork.
Have a nice evening.
annjackman (20371) 2012-05-15 12:03
An interesting story accompanies this super image. The girl is well positioned on the little bridge and you have given us the context of the place that she lives. I really enjoy these scans from a few decades ago - they are a lovely record.
Kind regards, Ann

Colors are excellent, sharpness and composition pleasant.

Once again a very nostalgic shot from years ago. I'm a very sentimental person and the old photo even if the quality is not as good as the new but it touches me more emotionally. Just imagine this girls is a mother of many children older than she was here. Wonderful scenery with multiple layers of hand build bridges.
TopGeo (38206) 2012-05-18 8:32
The place the shadows and the atmosphere has a different mood and interesting! An impressive scene
Very nice photo, with great contrast between tones these contrast of old time and very good choice for POV
Thanks for sharing this with us beautiful capture. Bravo!!
Very good result
Angshu (56406) 2012-05-22 21:31
What a fine portrait & what a fine scan from 36 years back! The clarity & details are absolutely superb! I have never known about this place before. The rickety walking bridges criss cross the canal. Your use of DOF to isolate the girl standing & posing for you on the bridge from the BG is beautifully done. The colour tones thanks to the light also comes out beautifully. The 2 earlier posts compliment your note & our knowledge well!
ourania (34433) 2012-09-14 8:19
for me this is an extremely interesting and fascinating picture due to its composition and colours as well as to the fact that I'm not familiar with this place at all. I love the depth and rhythm offered by the successive bridges and the boats, all of them turned to the same direction. The little girl with her serious expression and brightly coloured clothes seems to suspend over the canal. She establishes a great intriguing contact with this place. She stands out against the blurry background which my eyes try to pierce for more information. The colours are very rich and delightful. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
