Photographer's Note

A restored kitchen among the ruins of Pompei south of Naples. The entwined snakes are a symbol of health. The shedding of their skins signals renewal and rebirth. The snakes are still used today in hospitals as a logo either 2 snakes drinking from a cup as seen here, or a single snake entwined around a staff, called a 'Rod of Asclepius', but not 2 snakes entwined around a staff or a 'Caduceus' which is a symbol of commerce. No doubt this kitchen was certified as hygienic and safe to eat at. Oh and the shelf and the indented recesses for cooking / storing food are noteworthy too as are the bg tile mosaics!
