Good Morning Everyone,
After visiting friends in Dorset, we headed for Plymouth to catch the ferry to France.
We arrived in Plymouth with several hours to spare which gave us a great opportunity to explore the town. We had only, previously, been to the port, which gives little idea of what Plymouth has to offer. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised!
My post shows Smeaton's Towwer which is a centerpiece on Plymouth's Hoe. Smeaton's Tower has become one of the South West's most well-known landmarks.
The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 at a cost of £40,000, but was taken down in the early 1880s when it was discovered that the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on. Approximately two thirds of the structure was moved stone by stone to its current resting place on the Hoe.
Now standing at 72 foot high, Smeaton's Tower offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room which, along with the rest of the building, has been painstakingly restored to its original glory. - Plymouth Tourist Info.
A huge wheel, characteristic of many modern towns and cities, is close by. In the f/g you can see the top of Gary Rhodes restaurant.
Although the day was quite bright, the sky beyond the tower had wonderful, black clouds.
Have a great day, Bev :-)

I like the flattened perspective from the zoom and the half circle of the distant Ferris wheel on the horizon. The red and white lighthouse makes a superb focal point and sharpness is excellent. Good textural details on the painted lighthouse as we can still see the individual bricks. Tfs!

excellent contrast between the elements and the dark sky. The tower sound good and looks very inviting. Nice composition

A very well composed image that makes excellent use of the various graphical elements. The dark forbidding sky makes a great backdrop for the lighter tones offered by the lighthouse and wheel. A well lit image complemented by very good colours and sharpness. Did you sample the delights on offer at Gary Rhodes'?

Hoe, hoe, hoe! What a lovely photograph!
And what an interesting note too. Of course, I just had to look up Smeaton's Tower on Wikipedia and discovered that John Smeaton had been an incredibly good civil engineer and had used quite a novel way of locking granite blocks together to form the main structure of this lighthouse.
You have chosen an excellent viewpoint for this picture and your composition is excellent too, the lighthouse perfectly placed on the left "third" and nicely balanced by the wheel off to the right. Peter (graffer) would love to do one of his "Composition Analysis Workshops" on this one, drawing lines, curves and triangles all over the place!
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure against a moody sky and exquisite details and sharpness.

Well composed with the tower taking centre stage. least because it contrasts so vividly with that wonderful steely slate grey sky which is impressive in itself. Despite the sky the light is coming from the right direction to allow the tower to be so vividly lit in red and white. Very pleasing to the eye.

I see that you have been in our part of the world enjoying the delights of Plymouth Hoe,I must say that this is a most original view of Smeatons Tower, very different from the usual snap shots and one that works very well, the clouds making a very pleasant backdrop to the graphic shapes of the Tower and Ferris Wheel.
Lovely to see things from another well chosen view point.
Kind regards Les.

old and new iconic Plymouth this. Every City seems to be getting a wheel nowadays! Lovely shot of the old Eddystone lighthouse which you have captured sharply and beautifully. Excellent!

this is a beautiful lighthouse indeed... The white-maroon colour combination is worth seeing. It is looking better due to such dramatic dark sky at back. Excellent composition with sharp details of it and surrounding. Excellent. Tfs.

Excellent photograph of this beautiful lighthouse. Great composition with the big wheel at he back and the rustic stone walls at the base of the lighthouse. Great lighting with the dark moody clouds rolling in. Love it.

The strong colors of the lighthouse, helped by a very good lighting, make a beautiful contrast with the dark sky behind! Wonderful composition! Very good job!

I appreciate your lovely photograph.
The combination of the tower and the wheel is great. The wonderful sky supports the subject.
Details as colored characters on each side and open shutters add value to the whole.
Have a nice day,

Big wheel and red/white lighttower contrast superbly onto the grey sky aloft, beverly.
People climb the tower, probably have a wonderful sight over the city, yet they added a wonderful texture to this photo.

It with great pleasure I comment about lighthouse, being an admirer of Virginia Wolf and her book ( Skye Island it happens, when I arrived there it rained and keep raining the two days I spend there)
About your capture, quite eye catching (my taste) by the color contrast of grey and red, emphasized by the vertical format and frame
Great to see people enjoying views at the top
Good one, congrats

Hello Bev - The dark sky is the cherry on the cake here as it shows off the well lit lighthouse to great advantage. The contrasting light and crisp whites are very attractive. I remember visiting this lighthouse as a child, my mother got a bad case of vertigo and made a rapid decent! It's always a pleasure to see shots which nudge my memory so thanks for sharing this beauty. Warm regards rosemary

Like everyone else a fine dramatic view for the classical lighthouse and giant wheel, offset by the dark cloud background.
It also reminds me of the Colonies' Plymouth which has many ocean icons.
Happy trails to you,

Complimenti
Ciao e buona domenica

Hi Beverly, Bonjour,
Belle prise de vue et détails ,
beautiful lighthouse and architecture,
well presented and composed..
jcpix (13688) 2013-09-24 20:19
What a great composition, this is a terrific illustration of contrast! That of course is the first thing to stand out, but a closer look quickly displays a keen eye for the many, less obvious factors involved here. The shapes from each different element play quite well together to create a harmonious mixture to accompany the big, bold...and bright lighthouse. A giant candy cane of sorts set against the dark and brooding sky is a thing of beauty...just wouldn't want to be caught out in it when it really kicks up though!? :) Hope you're having a pleasant week. Take good care.
josepmarin (57823) 2013-09-30 2:45
the juxtaposition of the lighthouse and the huge wheel, with a threatening gray sky, as an efficient backdrop, create a splendid image, where the red and white colours of the lighthouse adds a nice chromatic touch in the composition.
A sharp and beautiful photo.
ourania (32083) 2013-09-30 12:28
I absolutely love this picture and its colours. You've created a wonderful composition in the vertical frame, there's a very elegant layout of signifcant elements and attractive perspectives. After a busy lower part, with interesting details and textures, the lighthouse rises alone against the dense grey sky and stands out in a captivating way, graced by the light and its colours. There's superb depth and amazing sharpness. I also like the human presence and the interest and scale it provides. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great month,
sevy (15365) 2013-10-07 1:58
Grey skies with graduation, as on this view, are often interesting. It is the case here, giving a piece of contrast on this nice lighthouse.
This one would have found its place in my lighthouse theme. I will put it on the list when I will come in GB.
