Another photograph from the feast day of San Sebastian in Pinchollo in the Colca Canyon.
After the dancing, and parading of the statue of San Sebastian, everyone retires for lunch - most going home, but the village elders and important guests heading for the local comedor. As the only gringos in the village, we managed to sneak a seat at the top table. Peruvian drinking involves a large bottle of beer and one glass, which circulates round the table. As with many rural communities anywhere in the world, the idea that you might be nervous about getting in your car to drive home after one too many is not considered a polite way to refuse a drink - even when the drive back to my hotel involved a dirt road hugging the wall of one of the deepest canyons in the world. So lads, if you want to join the after-party of a Latin American festival, don't go in your own car without a wife, girlfriend, female friend, mother, whatever to drive you back home.
The two lads in the photos are members of the village council - and are at least a little bit pickled after some hard partying.
As usual, no flash, 800 ISO, 1/60th of a second.

Hola amigo Iain :

Now thats the kind of politics I truly like and support. Imagine a G20 summit where the 20 most powerful politicians of the planet sitting around a table and sharing endless amounts of big beer bottles, the world would be a more peaceful place indeed! Well, this november is the next summit here in Korea, I'll see what I can do...
Back to the picture: Another wonderful piece of yours, love the sharpness of the man in front and especially love the expression of the one in the back. And once again, the high ISO did again! Well done!

Here an excellent choice of the B& W with beautiful contrast. The expression, the smile and especially the glance of these two symaptic men are very well collected. Excellent photowork.

Yet another very compelling portrait, a double portrait. A very typical feature of the Quechua/Inca or the South American Natives.
Black and white work very well here, more striking with good contrast.
Yes, they look a bit tire from the party, but still in good spirit. Enjoy life.

it is an interesting double portrait, their expressions are dreamy. i like also the blurred Bg that isolates the faces from all the rest. the B/W works well here because it transforms the many colors present into gray shadings, that are less distracting. compliment, a good work. and interesting note too:-)
have a nice evening, ciao

Very good detaisl for this intensive/expressive portrait. The best playing of light in an absolutely interesting BG. Well done Iain!

THIS IS A SPLENDID DOUBLE PORTRAIT! You captured them in a lovely expression, I really like this kind of b&w image.

A gallery, for what I see with strong colors, in this case BW, but always linked to an environment south - American (and Andean)
I understand your interest in my photo "Sardinian folk"

Seems a green channel conversion, would be interesting to see a red channel conv. anyway an amazing poise of the gentlemen, the faces tell the stories..what is with the checks..like a local art form, this combination could have been none other than Peruvian..
you have great interaction, your stories are a good read :)

Hi Iain, my best friend married a Afro-Peruvian man and one thing I can say for sure is that of all the races, I've never seen anyone party harder than a Peruvian. These blokes look like seasoned veterans and you've captured a very poignant candid moment. The B&W is beautifully contrasted and the lines are very clean. Nice work, have a good weekend, Lisa

very good double portrait. The faces are so full of character. Also their shirts add a nice pattern here. Great play with the DOF,
Very well done,

excellent, even compelling double portrait. The composition works well with the guy on the right in profile and the other in half profile.Your choice of b&w is a good one. They look like people it would be good to share a drink with.
jemaflor (86110) 2010-09-20 12:04
Good double portrait and good idea for a b&w presentation expressive faces, smile and tired too ... well done.
tomescuc (3291) 2010-09-24 22:06
Missed this one first time around, Iain. Perhaps a bit harsh in tones for me, but the instant you captured is so real. I think filling the frame with their faces is a good choice as their expressions tell stories. And your choice of DOF is excellent, with the soft blur of the bar behind matching their "pickled" state.
Selmik (3192) 2010-09-30 22:33
Good evening Iain,
lovely portrait, excellent choice of B&W option for this scene, good idea of side-view photograph which gives much attraction to the eyes and face expression, good clarity and details.
Very well seen and performed.
P.S. You can browse my gallery as long and as much as You want, that is why photographs are there, hope You will enjoy some ;-)

Molto bello il ritratto di questi due uomini.
La loro espressione mi fa pensare che li hai fotografati in un momento in cui la loro attenzione era attirata da qualcosa di specifico.
Buona l'idea di ricorrere al bianco e nero.
speedymanu (3585) 2010-10-04 22:10
a timeless type of portrait with these rugged yet happy faces. It is a superb depiction of rural outdoor life in its own way, a very evocative composition.
Have a nice day

you have a talent for telling stories that goes well with your photos. I liked this one and the complementary picture of the two visibly bit pickled men. Quite a good B&W and expressive too.
JCG (35129) 2010-10-06 0:03
One would think to twin brothers these two men, they resemble oneself so much !!! A beautiful photograph with a good choice of the black and white to accentuate the nostalgic aspect. I like the quality of the image in the management of the lights. Well done IIain.
With all my friendships and with soon,
s_lush (16134) 2010-10-22 6:47
This companion portrait is made masterfully by you. You have captured the two very important persons of the village at the very right moment and with excellent quality. I think the black-and-white mode is fully appropriate in this case. Perfectly good photo!
ruisc_pt (10890) 2010-10-23 6:16
The expression are really outstanding.
The B&W option results perfectly
jmdias (56655) 2010-10-23 7:07
Very nice portrait. I liked the natural posing of the models, the light is perfect and the framing too. We can feel the real mood of the moment and the place here. I visited colca canyon, anyway it was a fast visit.
AKITA (15125) 2010-10-23 18:42
maybe they are not twin, but their smiling expressions are synchronized like peanuts,
your focus is on the fore side face of the man, his feeling of life is well observed this picturesque side figure,
left back man, and back shelves are nicely blurred to make beautiful depth of B&W space here,
thank you for your wonderful shot,
clic (15310) 2010-11-01 13:43
An expression of true friendship is convied by those two "relaxed" funny faces who concluded unanimously that the more you dring, the less troubles you have governing the village!
adramad (38918) 2010-11-04 9:12
Saludos.
yeln (11504) 2010-11-06 12:12
