The underside of the Old Orchard Beach Pier on a clear November day. The warm light illuminated the wet sand and pylons beautifully from the south, while the blue tones of the sea and sky dominate the right. The barnacles on each pylon show the high tide mark; this shot was taken closer to low tide.
EXIF data was lost, as I had to use an online photo editor to resize this morning, so here it is:
Camera: Nikon D3100
Lens: Nikon 50mm AF-S DX f1.8 G
Focal Length: 50mm
Shutter Speed: 1/50
I'm not sure the small size here does this one justice, so here is a link to a larger version on Flickr.

Hi, Andrew, my neighbour today,
Wow! I remember similar scene, once upon a time a water supply system was broken and a park in town was submerged... Like this forest. Anyway, this is impressive scene. TFS!

Hi Andrew !
Very effective observation, enjoy the sand colour, close to mocca caffee:) So many poles, like trees in a forest. You were at the right time and spot, the high waves seen in the background add extra sensation. Nicely composed and presented, thanks for sharing !

Yes, it did lose something when shrunk to TE size, but it's still an attractive photo. Maybe a slight darkening would have incresed the effect of the light shining through this strange forest. A fascinating view in any case.

excellent idea for this different forest, i like so much the play of shadows, the golden light and the graphic aspect of the image...nice one...

Magnificent taken shot, Andrew.
Long ago I wondered about a picture like this - as we do not have places in Israel with a wooden piers alike - just remain in thoughts.
Great light managed, shadows and reflection, with blue sea and the white waves on backdrop's.
Fine shot indeed,

Hello Andrew - A creative look at the pier's legs. The larger upload really gives the feeling of being in a forest and the detail is really good. I love the strong diagonal shadows, together with the uprights they make a great graphic composition. I wonder how this would look translated to B&W? I do like the colours, the greens at the top of the posts, especially where the sun is catching it, is fabulous. Nice job. Warm regards rosemary

i pali conficcati sulla spiaggia in effetti riportano all'idea di una foresta.
Bel colpo d'occhio, buon titolo e perfetta composizione,

I feel there is a slight over exposure on top level of frame, thus conversion for this subject matter to mono, would be a wise decision. B&W would give a cleaner simplified image without color intrusion and emphasises the focus of attention straight on the array of shapes and shadows. You have great eyes, hope my suggestion is acceptable to you, Tx for sharing. Congrats.

I can see you've added some intersting shots to your portfolio recently! I really like this image for its abstract qualities. It's an eye-catching collection of lines complemented by lovely light and colours.

These piers seem to offer so much for the photographer, and a keen eye to catch this alternative forest. Lovely snippets of light through the trees, and the effect of light and shadow is beautiful. Nice deep vivid colour in the sand too.
All the ebst

I hope you didn't get any wet feet while taking this one?
Amazing place, really well captured with great colors. The way the colors change from blue to brown is amazing.
have a good day

Belle réalisation avec cette forêt de poutrelles en bois sur fond de mer.
Douces et belles couleurs, intéressant contraste entre la couleur terre / sable et le bleu de l'océan.
Bravo pour le POV et le cadrage.

I like the forest of weathered, barnacle-covered pylons with the strong shadows and lovely light. A great idea that has worked very well.
Kind Regards, Ann

I`m so glad you did go underneath the pier to capture this fabulous shot of the "forest". A kind of surreal shot with splendid colours and nice effect of the shadows. Thanks a lot:)
Best regards, Erling

When looking at this in thumbnail I thought it might have been Huntingdon beach, which is so famous for these pier structures. But I see it is on the other coast. Beautiful tight framing here, concentrates on the lovely graphism and reflections these piers make. The sand loks great and there ia a lovely symmetry to the shot. Congratulations.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely Sunday

I like this place and its forest of pylons.
A place where long exposure with a receding tide, will surely work wonder, did you tried?

Savoir voir est un art et tu n'as pas raté l'occasion de prendre cette magnifique photo. Elle me rappelle de bon souvenir d' Old Orchard. J'étais là en 1960 en voyage de noces. La présentation est merveilleuse et la lumière latérale agrémente la composition. Bel effet de l'ombre et de la lumière et beaux reflets.
Toutes mes félicitations!...

I really like this photo from a graphic artist point of view - the wonderful light is bringing out the natural colours of the green wooden weathered poles - the build up of shingles/sea matter is very nice - all set off by the golden sands & the ocean.
Andrew I would like to wish you & your family '' A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS '' with much love & good health for the New Year.

Hi Andrew. An original photograph from the pier. Well seen and presented. When you see the piles, one thinks first of a mangrove forest. Well done.
Waylim (25436) 2012-12-16 14:21
Very cool shot, it does look like a forrest full of tree trunks out of the water, kind of like a swamp land down in Lousiana and Florida. I love the shadow play and light, plus the reflection on the low tide. Excellent depth you have here, all collumns of the pier are in good focus and sharpness. Good POV that put us right underneath the pier got our feet all wet and cold too :)
