this is taken along the coast at a place known as 'the bloody bridge', near newcastle, in county down. today it is a car park area from where walkers set off for a day in the mourne mountains. in 1641 during a rebellion, it was the scene of a sectarian massacre. the river which flows to the sea at this point was said to have run red with blood, hence the name.
i took this today as another new year dawned, and the sun eventually began to show after being stuck behind a bank of thick cloud. but it was worth the two hour wait.
i used a 0.6 ND, and also a 0.9 ND GRAD over the sky and sea.

Not a place with nice history.. Quite strong pp work to enhance an impression. Nice photo made in the firest day of 2012.

An appropriate title and inspiring photograph. Alas, the image of the blood coloring the river over sectarian disputes is not a pleasing. But then, "More blood has been shed in the Kingdom of Heaven," it's said, "than in all other kingdoms."
Warm regards and I wish you a Happy New Year.

Hello Brian - Looks as if you had a clear day for the first of the year! You balanced the light well with the grads and I love the detail you captured in the rocks. I like what you have achieved with the colours, a super image to herald the new year. Warm regards and may all your photographic sorties be inspiring. Rosemary
PS. I don't want to nit-pick but you have a little white rim across the margin between the rocks on the LHS and the sky. Over-sharpening?

I really like this fragment of the coast. It is so impressive. The rock formations are stunning and every few meters you move it gets so different and not less interesting. Great composition here I like the well applied rule of thirds with the rocky foreground feeling most of the frame. The colors are fantastic, filters added a very nice touch.
Great performance. I am glad you were rewarded after a good while of waiting. It seems like a wonderful way to spend the New Years Eve.
Best of luck in the New Year!

I am amazed by the colors, mainly the water ones! It looks like a tropical sea! I like very much the pink cloud. Good framing and sharpness.
Happy new year for you and your relatives

I call this the happy hour (little bit more beautiful
than the blue hour) and I saw it fot the first time
Without this beautiful moment, the picture was
also beautiful, because it's taken from a great
point if view and it has a great composition and
light management.....Great work
Friendly regards and a happy 2012,

It looks like weather was good in county Down for the new year. That was not the case in Brittany, we had a lot of rain, not the right moment to take pictures ! Nice shot. You caught nice pinky colours in the sky. The exposure is excellent thanks to the filters, with very good details on the rocks in the foreground. Have a nice year 2012 !

Hello Brian, the vivid colours here are eye catching, well composed with plenty of depth, there's interest from the rocks in the FG to the distant cloud. Impressive image.

The magic of the moment is there for us to see. A stunningly beautiful depth and perspective encourage us to appreciate the transparency of this photo. Though the given history is well explained in your note, the passing of time has washed the shoe clean of all the blood shed on this coast. While the history and the name given to the place remain, we are compelled to appreciate the presented image in a new light. We look forward instead of backward to go on making a new history. Because of the history associated with this very place, we come to appreciate each day with a new sunrise hoping to see the shoe in ever-brighter light and greater hopes.
A Very Happy New Year 2012!
With my very best regards, Brian

Sorry for the delay. I have been without Internet for most of the last three days!
A most dramatic shot with the irregular rocks dominating the f/g but creating a natural lead into the shot. Love how you have composed the fractions of land, sea and sky.
Although the sky is red rather than the river, the symbolism still works.
All the best for the New Year,

Happy New Year to you, a little belated, sorry! What a stunning photo you've presented us with, combining my two favourite elements (sea and rocks) so skillfully. I love the soft pastel blue tonesd, the little ponds in the rocks and of course their pin-sharpness. The yellow lichen on the rocks to the left are a little bonus too. Great to be back, and faced with such an excellent piece of photography straight off the bat. Enjoy your week.

Fantastic picture executed with so perfect saturation, sharpness and exposure. Love this blue mood presented here. Very well done!

This is a spectacular image of the stark rocky sea-coast that with such palette of colors might as well be from another planet! The soft-hued purple skies with the pink clouds add to the atmosphere of other-worldliness.
Have a great weekend!
