Photographer's Note

A man selling betel from his tiny stall somewhere in Mumbai (Bombay). Although this photo was taken almost 34 years ago, I am sure this place or thousands like it will look exactly the same today.

Betel leaves are wrapped around spices, lime, chopped areca nuts and sometimes tobacco. They are chewed in large parts of Asia as a digestive and are also supposed to cure bad breath. They are also often suspected to lead to oral cancer and they definitely spoil the teeth.

For those who wanted something healthier carrot juice was available in the next store to the left.

This was scanned from an Ilford FP4 b&w negative.

Hopefully this is my last upload for a while. Icelandic ashcloud permitting I will go on holiday in a few days.
