A man selling betel from his tiny stall somewhere in Mumbai (Bombay). Although this photo was taken almost 34 years ago, I am sure this place or thousands like it will look exactly the same today.
Betel leaves are wrapped around spices, lime, chopped areca nuts and sometimes tobacco. They are chewed in large parts of Asia as a digestive and are also supposed to cure bad breath. They are also often suspected to lead to oral cancer and they definitely spoil the teeth.
For those who wanted something healthier carrot juice was available in the next store to the left.
This was scanned from an Ilford FP4 b&w negative.
Hopefully this is my last upload for a while. Icelandic ashcloud permitting I will go on holiday in a few days.

A great photo from the past, and as you say probably from the present as well. In Burma of course the Betel was chewed everywhere as well. But in Burma it is hard to spot this very "Indian Scene" with the man high up on his perch. I am pretty sure I would go for the carrot juice, but I must admit, I am sightly curious about the Betel. Another fine photo from your wonderful archives, warm regards,

I am sure that you are correct and that the scene is largely the same now. An interesting array of jars and even an old mirror with reflections. I would find the carrot juice rather more appealing! The scan of the b/w neg is very successsful.
Enjoy your holiday.
Best wishes, Ann

Fantastic photo again from your archives. I note with great interest all the details, the way the man sits on the edge of the desk and curious face of the young man. Excellent photo and scanning job. TFS and have a nice evening!

A very nice black and white shot of this small store where the man makes paan out of these leaves. He has all the fillings. Paan is very popular among the Indians. Very well composed. I like the mood.

Dear Mr. Gert,
Wonderful capture of a part of life in India. Betel leaf with masala and betel nut etc is a great fancy especially after a heavy lunch/dinner. It is also a custom in some places to offer betel (Paan)to guests as a courtesy.
The picture has a good depth and good POv.

another superb portrait can be seen in this nicely composed daily life. The Paanwala (betel = Paan) is looking well with his action. Your exposer management is superb in this black and white presentation. Great work. Tfs.

In this little food store everything is in order and the kettle is well polished. The man is focused so whats bothering his friend in behind? :) Great capture, indeed!

Nice daily capture of a betel nut/leave seller and two pairs of eyes with intense look, this is the most attractive part in this scene in my opinion. A lot of charm and real essence of this place well captured, I agreed with you that many like this remains unchanged till today and some times this condition make this place so special. The mirror reflection adds another dimension and interest, a plus point. Great street photo and excellent scan as always. Have a great holidays, Congrats

Bon voyage Gert, hope your plane gets off the ground. I remember those ingredients from my trip to Malaysia, the ladies chewing it had red mouth & horrible black teeth, I tried some. Nice BW, I like this guy perched on the bench but I like even more the young man you captured behind him, looks like some one out of a Bollywood movie. Well done, interesting image & as always very well realised.

Hi Gert. Also this Phopto fits perfectly in your series on India. The photo reminds me of pictures of HCB. Title, picture and text complement each other perfectly. Compliment. Rgds, Wolfgang.

black and white serial is for my soul. I will tell that in Sweden, when my wife will be near by (she lived in Goteborg). And in our family we like Sweden. Friendly

Another great old one! I wonder if the place looks much different now! The details, their poses, the b&w, it's just wonderful!

Such places in Mumbai are averse to change and I am sure this one remains the way it is. You have captured the India that exists in every possible city and village. Great in B/W.

excellent photo from the past.great details..and i love the whole set up.
ourania (34513) 2013-08-04 8:35
a great daily life capture, rendered timeless, intense and atmospheric by the rich b&w tones. I like very much the richness of the textures and how the place and the image are illuminated by the bright white parts. Even though everything seems to have paused for a moment, the scene has a sense of spontaneity and we can infer a lot about the betel seller's work. The young man's gaze from the background is captivating and adds a lot of power to the photo. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
