Photographer's Note

Morro Bay, Morro Rock and sailboats combined in this view for a balmy winter morning. Morro Rock rises 576 feet above the sea level and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and crew in 1542 were the first Europeans to see it. The smooth waters of Morro Bay are man made by placing rock fill between Morro Rock and the beach, blocking the northern opening to the bay.

Abalone gathering was popular long ago, but over fishing decimated their numbers. Today boat fishermen venture outside the Bay to catch halibut, sole, rockfish, albacore, etc.

There are a number of hotels and restaurants available for tourists in town, overlooking Morro Bay.
