I am sure the colours of this scanned photo may not please everyone, but this is the best I can do. This photo from southern India in 1987 was taken at the beginning of the north-west monsoon, when the sky was often covered with heavy clouds creating a strange light. This was probably from just before one of the daily heavy showers.
These girls have come to visit the famous 8th century Shore temple in the town of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), 58 km south of Chennai (Madras). Mahabalipuram is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site because of its abundance of ancient temples and sculptures.
In December 2004 Mahabalipuram was hit by the devastating tsunami. To tell you what happened then I will quote straight from Wikipedia:
Immediately before the 2004 tsunami struck the Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal, the ocean water off Mahabalipuram’s coast pulled back approximately 500 meters. Tourists and residents who witnessed this event from the beach recalled seeing a long, straight row of large rocks emerge from the water. As the tsunami rushed to shore, these stones were covered again by water. However, centuries’ worth of sediment that had covered them was gone. The tsunami also made some immediate, lasting changes to the coastline, which left a few previously covered statues and small structures uncovered on the shore.
Eyewitness accounts of tsunami relics stirred popular and scientific interest in the site. Perhaps the most famous archaeological finding after the tsunami was a large stone lion, which the changing shoreline left sitting uncovered on Mahabalipuram’s beach. Archaeologists have dated it to the 7th century AD. Locals and tourists have flocked to see this statue since shortly after the tsunami.
In April 2005, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Indian Navy began searching the waters off the coast of Mahabalipuram by boat, using sonar technology. They discovered that the row of large stones people had seen immediately before the tsunami were part of a 6-foot-high, 70-meter-long wall. ASI and the Navy also discovered remains of two other submerged temples and one cave temple within 500 meters of the shore.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. I will add another photo from the same place, but from a nicer day, as well as a closer view of the Shore temple, as workshops.
Here is a larger version.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Intressant not.

This is a photo taken 27 years ago, but the bike looks very modern :)
Very nice scene with smiling women at this impressive temple, interestig noteregards

I like very much how the vibrant and interesting row of people extends across the frame and is parallel to the ancient structures. People and site are inextricably linked in this composition and each part adds interest and reference to the other. There's sense of movement, interesting attitudes and stories in the foreground. The bike and the box are attractive elements, with a well applied framing role. I like how the colours are both vivid and moody. The workshop pictures are lovely and add to the fascination already created by this one. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

first of all, thanks so much for the kind words about the photos in my gallery - means alot, truly.
as for this one, the note is A+
I had no idea that sunami waves could un-earth the ocean floor in such a way that ancient statues etc...could be brought back UP!
Mother nature sure is amazing.
Its too bad it had to be a sunami for it to take place.
From strictly an archioligist point of view it must have been like winning the lottery!
in the scene here, it seems to be that only 1 of the girls in the group is 'alone' and not interacting with at least one other person. lots of interactions going on here. I bet if you had a group of men like this, more than just 1 would be isolated :)
fine post once again

Hi Gert, High quality image even though it was taken from 27 years ago. The group of girls look very excited with this outing. The temple is not built tall but with lovely carving on it. The bicycle probably belong to one of the girl. Lovely colours and great tones. Best regards

This is a really interesting scene with so many elements and colors still available to admire even on the scan version. Like it a lot! The temple dominates here however its architecture and design is stunning and worth to include here. Well done and TFS!
Have a nice day!

This is an excellent picture full of life and action and of course, lovely sharpness, details and colour (I like the vibrant colours of your scanned pictures). Great atmosphere and perfect composition with the majestic temple against the clouds making a great backdrop and the cycle in the foreground the perfect anchor.
Thanks for sharing and have a great Sunday.

Again a interesting scene from a time long gone by. Arn't girls the same everywhere, gathering here around this stall, selling cheap jewelry. Almost as important as the girls or the amazing structure of the temple, is the prominent bicycle in the foreground.
Amazing story about the eye witnesses of the horrible Tsunami and the uncovering of long lost statues by it.
have a great day
kato (11630) 2014-05-04 4:34
You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see many girls who are wearing colorful long skirt and ancient stone temple with unique shape in back.
abmdsudi (56302) 2014-05-04 7:17
All girls affair - women & gossiping in the making and what was the guy doing there, wonder how we can we ignore those colours and the very engaging warm faces which surprised by your lens perhaps, but they turn this shot alive in equally attractive surrounding with the temple adds perspective. Load of additional interest around, the placement, pose and eye contact are most attractive as the two girls speak to us directly. Excellent street people picture. Congrats
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-05-04 7:25
You may think it's not the best of quality but for an old photograph this is classic and good capture of the cultural event of other people. And it is the best way to learn about others. I like the candid shot of those girls and women in their colorful dress. Well done, tfs.

Please make no apology for the quality of your scanned photographs: we all must understand the difficulties of scanning colour transparencies (even Kodachrome ones) which are nearly 30 years old and I am sure that most of us find the subject matter and the in-depth notes which you give to be far more important than the sheer technical quality of your images.
A fascinating note about this coastal place and its temples as well as some very interesting information about the tsunami which hit this place many years after your three photographs were taken. And a fine trio of pictures too. Your main picture might have been taken in less good weather than the other two but to me it is the most appealing of them because it is filled with life, activity and fun, so many of these girls really appearing to be enjoying themselves.
And, actually, I think these pictures are all of really quite excellent quality!
danos (100830) 2014-05-04 23:27
nice the photo from the oldies with all these colourful dresses of the girls to are so close to the temple.I like the good reportage shot from the place as the beauty of it.
Royaldevon (40990) 2014-05-05 6:09
It's hard to believe that it was so long since the tsunami! It is hard to imagine how the 'spectators' of this catastrophe must have felt, seeing the sea disappear and stone statues emerge!
You scene is so very relaxed, a calm gathering for exploration and a chat.
I didn't realise, until I saw your w/s, that the bicycle was used to transport the equivalent of a shop! A wonderful way of being mobile!
These scanned shots are treasures.
What a great archive you possess!
Have a great day,
nikkitta (17066) 2014-05-05 12:20
Anyway you succes in scaning this well composed capture, a mix of people and temple, as you like, I believe for once the gray sky is good for contrast
What I like the more are the colorful saris of the women and the fact that mostly are smiling, talking, moving, happy to be there
Of course the two ones at the fron are not so happy with your shot, impossible to make everyone happy
Good informative note
Congrats and regards

Nicely photo from daily life.
Good frame and interesting colors (Kodachrome).
Bice add savor of composition.
I like it.

I always love the scans. They are nostalgia at their best, and this is no different.
Love the girls in their unique attires.
PS: I am here after almost a month away from TE (for unavoidable reasons), am glad to see your photos again.
emka (102562) 2014-05-06 4:31
Hu Gert, this is probably the shot that you have posted before. Very nice scene with all these girls and a bike. They do not seem specially interested in the famous Shore Temple that is behind them. The colours are old style and there is much charm in it. you were lucky to this scene so populated, it was quite empty when was there. Very interesting note about new findings after tsunami.
I have an impression that not many people at WS so I post one specially for you, for some fun. Ten years is less than 27 but in some aspect quite different time.
WArm regrads MAlgo
Kamilutka (8107) 2014-05-06 7:42
I love the colors of this picture, you must not worry about them at all - they make the photo so cheerful and interesting. The abundance of details can be almost overwhelming and this is one of these pictures which one like to dwell on for a bit longer to discover them all. The composition is very nice and the bicycle in the foreground definitely adds to the scene as much as the temple in the background.
Thanks for sharing
carlo62 (52050) 2014-05-07 5:20
Waylim (25502) 2014-05-07 10:27
Classic shot combining daily life and architecutre element. I like the lively scene with all the girls in the foreground, the temple make a perfect backdrop to this composition. Very nice scan.

Another nice old image from South India. You have got caught the girls unaware with your lens.I must have been of the same age as most of there girls in the frame, but then time never stops for anyone.I love the color tone of the old rolls.TFS.
kasianowak (9713) 2014-05-28 7:46
Interesting vibrant and colourful group scene, just like the previous one taken by the sea. I don't mind the colours so much as they add a kind of vintage feel to the image but it's nice to see the temple bathed in lovely light in the WS.
Great idea to add a shot of the tourists as well. What is missing is a photo taken after 2004. :-) Have you thought of going back there to see what has changed???
Hope you're enjoying Poland!
adores (46079) 2014-06-15 9:40
I like the daily scene and even the colours of the photo. It's a very good old one. It's great to see all these sellers and smiling faces around, with the temple as background. Monsoons can offer some magical moments! Very well taken and scanned!

interesting how the group of girls at center are angry with you while there are happiness around. in fact this is the first time I see an image from indian people facing a camera with angry, something very usual in morocco. very nice architecture.
