A Monk at the Hemis Gompa sharing a joke. Decided to repost this one with a crop and a frame..there is something so simple and real in his expression...
"his form with indifference see...." - George Bernard Shaw ? :)
Alongside is the customised drum which is used for rituals and ceremonies.
Buddhism is often described as a religion and a collection of various philosophies, based initially on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as Gautama Buddha.
To many, however, Buddhism is not a religion, nor a philosophy or a set of doctrines, but rather teachings to guide one to directly experiencing reality. Buddhism is also known as Buddha Dharma or Dhamma, which means roughly the "teachings of the Awakened One" in Sanskrit and Pali, languages of ancient Buddhist texts.
Buddhism began around 5th century BC with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in Ancient India, and is hereafter referred to as "the Buddha."

Can we smile like him?
A SMILE WORTH A LIFE...
johnfreeman (2274) 2007-12-13 9:15
Nice shot Sayeed. The monk's wonderful smile really makes it. I had a look at the original version and this is certainly a big improvement: composition is more effective, the colours are more saturated and the face is now in focus.
markstaples (15670) 2007-12-13 9:36
This is a great portrait which has been well framed. The quality is very good and you have indeed captured a nice smile. Nice work.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2007-12-13 9:50
This is an interesting portrait with the smiling face of the man.I like the light and the nice colors you get.
zo_tos (1084) 2007-12-13 10:19
the expression on the face of the monk is very nice, i also like the colours and the equilibrate light of your shot,
avene (12675) 2007-12-13 11:18
compared to the original version this is so, so, SO much better, you've done wonders, friend :) the crop you've chosen is just right - it focuses on the face, but still include all the necessary elements to illustrate his life. love the colours, so rich, while remaining elegan. excellent work, my compliments!
jaywalker (16101) 2007-12-13 12:02
Hi Sayeed, A nicely composed portrait of this monk as he plays the drum, "I must admit he looks very happy in his work", the deep reds of his clothing have been captured beautifully &, your POV is perfect, great shot & TFS, kind regards Wilson.
delkoo (68) 2007-12-13 12:43
You've done that very effectively here, your repost is better and improve the whole picture, now, it couldn't have been better framed with the solid drum near his face.
zeca (19762) 2007-12-13 19:04
Very nice portrait, Sayeed! The happy man! Excelent mood! The lights are well managed.
dhurjati (2709) 2007-12-14 0:10
Nicely done indeed.Good colours and a happy mood.Lovely to see the innocent smile in the face. The subject is very nicely placed and the timing of shot is excellent.

stefpat (1024) 2007-12-14 7:08
Very sympathic picture...give a smile at everywhere.
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2007-12-14 9:01
Hi, Sayeed -
Yes, this is much improved over the previous version (which was good, even so). You came close to cropping too much at the top, where the drum ornament almost touches the frame. Otherwise, very nice job!
Gustaw (21670) 2007-12-14 10:41
Hi, my friend!
It is very interesting photo. I like tour oryginal portrait. I like your scene and atmosphere. Well done. Nice colours and light.
ViktorVaughn (1521) 2007-12-14 14:37
Great smile you caught on this man. I like his red clothing matched with his red tuque (what we call his red hat in Canada).
It's an interesting looking drum, with an interesting tool to beat it with.
Graal (103032) 2007-12-15 0:51
very nice portrait and natural smile. Fine captured scene and theme, good informations. I like it.
crckt (7222) 2007-12-15 6:33
I agree, thats a great smile! very pure, very true. Brilliant capture.
trekks (14348) 2007-12-15 8:07
I like this smile when I see it from miles away, Sayeed. I wish you have that smile too, it will bring you extra 5000 bonus points.
I find that you have cleverly framed this without showing his feet (why, he has no feet?) although I would very much like to see them, and find out what type of shoe-wear.
In particular, I like his trademark smile, very contagious. I wonder if he tells fortunes, if so, you will have big ones Sayeed. And he is no ordinary monk, he wears a modern zipper-shirt, in red/black, and his outer coat has silver/pearl buttons.
I like his cap. He smiles until his eyes is a line. Well done, Sayeed, but just bring back his feet, for me, it may bring me fortunes!
ARGI (3456) 2007-12-15 12:09
An Excellent shot with Very good POV and fantastic corols
ls7902 (7348) 2007-12-15 21:40
Wow. A beautiful portrait Sayeed. Nice colors, sharpness, saturation, details, depth and everything. I wish I could produce something like this. Well done.
Merline (0) 2007-12-16 3:10
what a happy smile! I smile in return and I think you did a very nice job indeed in comparison to the original! I like your vertical, tight, close framing, the way you caught him in this activity, the corner of the wall in the background provides a nice graphism of lines in contrast to the roundness of the gong. I may have used a tool to take away that bit of something on the left, but that's a tiny detail. Great rendering of the warm colors...
MarcT (20964) 2007-12-19 13:40
Excellent colors, great smile, beautiful situation.
sanita (81) 2007-12-20 1:10

batalay (39149) 2007-12-22 4:23
This is a first rate portrait of the monk with his gong, and the informative note that complements a very good TE package.
Warm regards and Seasons Greetings,

A proof of this: How come a postprocessing can give a photo its rebirth! From the ashes like a phoenix!
It is very nice of you to repost it along with its original version, now i am gaping with awe. The color palette is captivating, and the moment is really happy.

coco (30439) 2007-12-27 2:16
The monk and the expression of his face are amazing. Also I like your note and how he plays the drum.
lestans (17168) 2007-12-27 9:12
what a lovely portrait, what a friendly smile!!
And I like the composition, I see here a "double portrait": also his drum has a face! There is a relationship between the man's face and the drum shape, this is what I mean
snunney (100850) 2007-12-28 3:18
A very good portrait of this man and his infectious smile. I like the lighting and the tight crop putting the appropriate emphasis on the man and his drum. Good colours and clarity.
jplebrun (21208) 2007-12-28 3:34
j'aime bien cette expression de joie et de paix que reflète cet homme , tu as bien saisi cette particularité, bravo.
sadeik (3282) 2007-12-30 4:35
I see that all the modern world trappings are used, don't blame him its probably cold. A nice thermal jacket and woolly hat. I like his smile and they way you have composed the shot althought if you had taken the photo just a bit lower down it might have just given the photo that real extra wow factor.
I think it is because you are slightly higher than he was.
Angshu (56758) 2007-12-30 21:52
You got a portrait shot for which I envy you...the warm smile is a 'prize' catch. The light is good & so are the colours. Huge difference with the original post in every count...well done, he deserves it. Good work Sayeed

Original shot, very well done! TFS.
Guillem69 (4) 2008-01-01 2:36
Un buen retrato, el fotógrafo en sintonía con el sujeto retratado, quizá corregiría el encuadre cogiendo al hombre sólo a partir de su cintura o bien de cuerpo entero e incluyendo sus pies.
Fis2 (99794) 2008-01-01 3:23
Curious frame and composition. Interesting person. I like the colors and climate. Well done.
Happy New Year 2008!

a really nice portrait you made here. And I like your explanations about Buddhism a lot. A picture becomes even more interesting when a good description of its content is given, like in this case.
My best wishes for a New Year to you,
danos (99309) 2008-01-01 8:51
Hello my friend,I was browsing and came across your fine image taken at the most decisive moment. The colours are outstanding and the light is perfect. I don't think you could better the quality or the sharpness, they are just outstanding. It's a superb capture, with a educational Buddhism note.
Have a happy New Year,Danos

The man's expression tells a pure story of his life time, the colors he wears are red but each piece of different tone. The carpet lying next to him feel so soft yet so rich. Great capture!

Clairedelune (4923) 2009-05-02 10:23
Yes I know, it's an "old" photo. But I like "old" photos! ;)
What can I say? Well... with so many critiques for this photo already, I doubt I would be original. Quite often, I have a look at what others have said, but I feel lazy. So, sorry if I repeat what you know already.
Well... simple! I like it! Very simple, but yet, very effective. I especially love the colors in there. Good framing, sweet moment, the smiling monk and its instrument give a "feel-good" photo. Definitively an improvement over your previous version. But, there are a few "mistakes". Which are?
Well, the most obvious is a problem with the sharpening. Yes, it needed a sharpening, but your way to sharpen has left a slight white line around some contrasty parts. See especially his left side.
I would also get rid of the base of the column. And last, I would 'clean' the white spot on its clothing.
But hey, don't be bothered. If I am telling you all this, it is because I think your photo is good in the first place!
scalerman (26900) 2009-05-04 23:02
Sayeed: I missed this one before - but it's a classic composition obviously. Congratulations here. c
