A Chorten is an integral part of Buddhism and also an object of reverence. In its original form, the Chorten is a monumental stone or mudbrick structure. It is also known as Stupas, though they are more elaborate structures and are found in places more important to Buddhism. These hemispherical burial mounds entombed the remains of holy men and could also mark the sites of important events in the lives of these figures. This burial tradition was transported throughout Asia and was adapted in Tibet in the form of the Chorten, and in China, Korea, and Japan in the form of the pagoda,a word more familiar to most western ears.
Structurally, chorten generally follow a set form, composed of five main parts: a base (the bumpa), a domed cylinder, thirteen round disks, a lotus umbrella, and a crescent moon holding a sun. These sections represent the five elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space respectively. The thirteen round discs are also said to symbolize the stepstowards enlightenment encompassing The Eightfold Path, TheFour Noble Truths, and enlightenment itself.
Chortens are venerated by circumambulation,a form of worship in which Buddhists walk around the object being celebrated. The act of circumambulation is often accompanied by the chanting of mantras(prayers) and the burning of incense.
The above shot is a set of Chortens in Lamayuru Monastery in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.
Thanks for reading.

Oh Yes! I almost do remember well where you took this picture from in Lamayuru. The animisitic artwork has been well depicted..like the small wheels which the believers turn while walking. Lamayuru has a wonderful setting & I wish to see your picture of this setting

We get a great idea of this interesting temple and of its well-lit surroundings, depth and clarity are superb. Apart from that, even beyond the physical description, the picture is a delight to look at for its beautiful light and nice complementing colours. Well done.

a fascinating shot this. Love the colours and the character of these old Stupas. Makes for a wonderfully tantalising image.
Enjoy the weekend - B.
Not sure why you went for such a fast shutter speed here, unless you were on something that was moving. If not, a lower speed of say 1/250 would have given you a greater DOF and perhaps sharper detailing, not that this seems to have affected that here in this shot. Just a thought - hope you don't mind. :-).

Fabulous composition with the view of this group of beautiful stupas, color and detail of this spectacular sky give a chromatic richness to the composition. Very interesting footnote to valorize the pretty picture.
A day with good light that gives very good color.
The brightness and sharpness are also perfect.
Have a good weekend.
All the best.

Interesting subject and commentary, with all the elements blended nicely together, the view point is great and its dynamic orientation with the stupas nicely aligned and lead the eye through and beyond. I am overwhelmed by those detailed highlights and vivid colours, and contrast to deep blue sky is just great. A shot with lots of feeling! Lovely capture, Congrats and tfs

Wow, the large version is huge. So much details, maybe it does need to be that big. You want people to be able to view on the screen without having to scroll over to the the other half. It loose the sense of composition. It is like you have to mental stitch the two picture together :)
Anyway, but the detials is certainly top quality. This takes me back to my trip in the Himalaya in Nepal and Tibet. I feel out of breath just looking at this. Beautiful temple and good photo quality.

You are presenting interesting structures with an informative note. I learned something new accompanied by a competent photo of colorful roof decorations and pretty spires with majestic mountaintops in the b/g.

The mountains are helping to frame the chortens. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the chortens. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colours. Have a nice day.

A fascinating note to accompany this fine and educational image! I am familiar with stupas, but chorten is new to me. Last time I was in the nicest Indian garden in Ireland, I saw what I believed to be a number of stupas under construction in the forest, but I must check this out and see if they are these instead.
The colors are beautiful in the scene too, in particular the yellow and black stripes and the red base with the lions stand out well. The sky is filled with activity, and there is a beautiful sense of place, with the tips of the other structures all around, and the rugged mountains under both light and shade. Looking at this makes me feel like I am in a very far and distant place, and one of great importance.
Thanks as always

Details of the chortens (stupas) in Lamayuru gompa I've never visited yet. I like the patterns with bright colors and lions, some prayer flags also, thanks and see you
