Photographer's Note

"Children Day", as an event, is celebrated on various days in many places around the world, in particular to honor children. Major global variants include a Universal Children's Day on November 20, by United Nations recommendation.Children's Day is often celebrated on other days as well.
The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland proclaimed June 1 to be International Children's Day in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the International Children's Day: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which was on June 1. that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.

India's Children's Day is celebrated on November 14th the birthday of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Most schools hold cultural performances on this day, run by the children themselves, and teachers also get involved to make it a day to enjoy and remember. Nehru emphasized the importance of giving love and affection to children, who he saw as the bright future of India, and this ideal is celebrated on this day.
State and Central governments also make it a point to showcase Children's films as part of Film festivals organized in many parts of the country on this date. Many functions are organized in schools, offices etc. As a tribute to this great man and his love for the children, his birthday is celebrated all over India as ‘CHILDREN’S DAY’. Most schools have cultural programmes for the day, with the students managing it all. All over the country, various cultural, social, and even corporate, institutions conduct competitions for children. Children's Day is a day for children to engage in fun and frolic. Schools celebrate this day by organizing cultural programmes. Teachers of the school perform songs and dances for their students. Therefore, Children's Day is special. It is a day set aside to remember Pandit Nehru and his love for children.

Hello Madhumita.
This is a lovely photo (as pictures of children so often are). The serious looking little girl is very interested in your camera, which means we all can feel we have a good eye-contact with her. The woman obviously has very warm feeling for her grandchild (i presume). The evening light has given the picture very warm and beautiful colours.

A lovely double portrait, the lighting is exquisite. I love the expression on the child’s face. She sees directly into your eyes. The lady seems to be very pleased too. Gorgeous saturated colours due to very slight (and deliberate, I'm sure) under-exposure. A lovely double portrait, beautifully framed (in-camera I mean, not the formal frame). The girl's expression and eye-contact really make this image come to life, as does the obvious happiness and pride in the woman holding the child (mother?). You have a real talent at informal street portraiture!

This is a lovely double portrait of the child with mother/grandmother? The light, the colors and composition all collaborate effectively. I particularly like the note also. I did not know about Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday (Nov. 14) adopted as Children's Day. I went to university at with the son of the Indian Ambassador to the United States (BK Nehru). My friend was Anil Nehru, his aunt (his mother's first cousin) was Indira Nehru Gandhi, and great uncle was Jawaharlal. After decades we came together last summer, when I visited Anil in Chanigarh and gave a lecture at the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi.
