It is not easy and a relatively expensive trip to get here. The reservations are booked out the first hour it is available. With careful planning, we were able to get a permit to come here to Katmai National Park and Reserved for Bear Viewing during salmon run season. We also got the permit to stay here, camping in side an electric fence, for 3 nights. We were very lucky to have been there during the peak of the salmon run. Each year is a little varies between early and late July. If you are too early there are no bear around, and too late they are already done. For the last few years it has been late July. This year, due to the warm weather in Alaska, the salmon run has been early, they started in mid-June and peaks at in mid-July when we were here. We saw many bears at Brooks Falls catching salmon while they are swimming upstream to spawn. It may look easy, but it is not. And the bear don't normally catch the fish with its mouth, though I'm sure it happens once in a while. Most of the time they catch them with their paws when the fishes land in the shallow and narrow area. The bear can't move around that much up on the top of the fall, he has to balance himself so he doesn't fall. You can imagine the frustration seeing the fish so close but you just can't get it. In the WS there another shot of the bear with a fish.

A lively wildlife shot of the bears feeding during the Salmon run. Superb colors clarity and light too good. I like the expression of the bear in the FG eying the jumping salmons. The bears make good contrast with the glistening white water. Excellent timing and superb photo. Thanks for sharing.
jjcordier (69557) 2013-12-17 23:34
serp2000 (35068) 2013-12-17 23:46
Superb! What can I say? This is one of my favorite photos on the TE. Amazing scene, it reminds me the photos from Russian Kamchatka.
emka (67259) 2013-12-17 23:56
Hi Way, I have seen already this photo on PF but it amazes me always. I would love just to see such scene, but you were able to make such perfect shot, it would be gem of national geographic. Superb timing and sharpness, even of salmons. magnificent.
Warm regrads MAlgo
daddo (21258) 2013-12-17 23:58
Hi Way. A refreshing, unexpected photo. it's a composition beyond any criticism as it basks in a lovely light and exhibits perfect timing with the salmon caught leaping over the cataracts.Superb colours and sharpness- truly a masterly creation. Lucky you to have witnessed what the rest of us see only in wildlife documentaries. bravo Way. Reading your notes it looks as if seeing something like this when one is at the park is a bit like wining a lottery. Regards. Klaudio.
papagolf21 (80932) 2013-12-18 0:22
Extraordinaire photographie. L'ours attend, anticipe, et va réagir au passage d'une belle prise.
La réussite est totale.

You were lucky to see such a nature show!
As usual, your composition and the exposure are perfect.

Hello Way ,
A fantastic nature picture ! This amazing wild scene is perfectly composed .
The WS is excellent , too .
Great capture !
danos (80252) 2013-12-18 1:15
seeing this snapshot with the bear to be waiting for its lunch here in Greece we have an expression about it,this 'come to the ungle...'.
Excellent snapshot as the other on the Ws,that tell us from the daily life of this wild animals leaving on the North.I like the fascinating light and colour management as the decisive moment of the scene.
mkamionka (28031) 2013-12-18 1:45
spectacular photo. I have seen it on TV of course but I guess it is not the same :)
I like very much great light sharpness and clarity here which made it so vivid and eye catching. You have well captured the jumping salmons there are few of them and again so sharp while the bear expects them indeed on top of the waterfall.
Surprisingly some of the bears are taking an easy route diving below the waterfall.
Amazing spectacle it was worth to pay a big price and travel inconveniently to be able to see it and to show it to us afterwards.
trevormoffiet (1796) 2013-12-18 1:50
What a classic. I am sure that this image will have a few TEs wanting to go and experience and capture what you did. Perfect composition.
CLODO (27484) 2013-12-18 1:58
So you were rewarded, and we are too! You've caught the perfect moment, and apparently, you were VERY close (100mm!) to see this stunning live scene, well lighted.
lousat (67057) 2013-12-18 2:48
Fantastic capture of the fishing season for the bears, they are waiting salmons jump directly in their mouth..ehehe...and you caught in the best way this moment, great details on the in flight salmons and spectacular view too,a masterpiece!! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

awesome shot, truly stunning.
this shot is worth every point assigned to it
cebe (1447) 2013-12-18 5:14
Hello Way. It's a superb photo. The bear at the top carefully watching and half a dozen salmons in the air just below! The other bears participate very well in the scene too. I lived in AK for a few years and I didn't know it was so difficult to get a permit for that park, although I easily understand why it can be a very popular place at that time of the year. Best regards, Claude.
SnapRJW (26074) 2013-12-18 6:48
Hello Way - Thank you for sharing this fabulous experience with us, your shots together with your note make fascinating viewing and reading and I can only guess what a thrill it must have been to witness this wonderful event. Magical! Warm regards rosemary
Didi (52415) 2013-12-18 7:13
This is a awesome scene well catched
Very good decisive moment for the bear attitude
yquem46 (37476) 2013-12-18 7:33
Brooks falls is really a very famous place to watch grizzly bears trying to catch salmons, waiting for them on top of the cascade
You're very fortunate that you were there at the right time of the year among so many people queueing for this attraction
But it was well worth the efforts and you've been rewarded
I wish i could go there
Bravo, have a nice day
ktanska (23144) 2013-12-18 10:59
I can well imagine it is hard to get there. Bigger crowds would for sure cause distruption.
A beautiful place showing one of the great natural events. I haven't seen this before in TE, but I've seen a nature document which describes how important salmon spawn is to local ecosystem, bringing energy and nutritions from the sea.
parvatibb (1295) 2013-12-18 11:17
Fantastic shot! They look so cute. I know I should not called 750 kg carnivals cute but they are
One day I would like to visit Alaska, looks beautiful.
mesutilgim (75524) 2013-12-18 11:24
Amazing capture of this great fight for survival !

this scene is fantastic, full of interest and action. I imagine it's very difficult for people who aren't professional documentary makers to watch and capture this amazing spectacle. You were very lucky to run into this scene and we are really lucky you captured it with such great timing, precision and clarity. Wonderful light and colours enhance our delight and wonder. A beautiful and extraordinary photo. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

Impressive shot ! You perfectly caught the moment where the bear will probably catch the salmons ! Very beautiful light, excellent sharpness.
holmertz (33489) 2013-12-18 11:59
This is an absolutely fantastic photo. It must be one of the best ever on TE. And it's not only Nature, but to my mind also Daily Life and Food :-). It is so well timed and offers such a fascinating view, at the same time being technically and aristically just superb.
Thank you humbly for sharing.
olive224 (2717) 2013-12-18 12:13

Ciao e buona serata
nikkitta (10418) 2013-12-18 14:09
How good is to have you back, with your memories of life in Laos and this quite refreshing capture (here temperature is today realy warm)
Your capture is, besides tecnically great, full of life, the waiting concentrated bear, some more on the water, the jumping fishes, the splash of water
No easy and not creap place to be, great for you and us of your presence there
Love the "happy end" at the WS
kwekwekan (866) 2013-12-18 14:58
A stunning photo. Of course the subject matter is great, but what is really fantastic about this shot is your meticulous composition and timing. From the salmon in mid-flight, to the four bears beneath the waterfall just doing there thing and your beautifully lit subject patiently awaiting his meal - the whole image is so expertly crafted. Thanks very much for sharing.
jcpix (8296) 2013-12-18 15:44
Fantastic shot Way, this is right out the pages of National Geographic! What an experience this must have been, I can sense the anxiety and suspense just looking at this wonderful shot. Nature in one of its purest forms, and captured with excellent timing and precision. If only those poor salmon really knew what was awaiting them upstream, I don't think they'd be in such a rush! ha I could go on an on about this and use up every adjective I know, but let it be said, this is most impressive!
carlo62 (22301) 2013-12-18 15:51
che scatto fantastico, questa scena l'ho vista solo in foto o nei documetari, credo che sia incredibile assistere alla scena di persona.
Eccellente qualità, come lo sono sempre le tue foto.
worldcitizen (6023) 2013-12-18 17:08
This is an amazing nature photo. It should be featured in National Geographic! The action in the foreground, with the jumping fish and waiting bear, is fabulous, and then as a bonus there are even more bears wading through the water. I can feel their determination to catch some salmon. I wonder if they just swallow the entire fish at once, bones and all. It must have been exhilarating to actually see this in person.
abmdsudi (35282) 2013-12-18 17:22
This is one of the most amazing shots I've seen; Movement in the water, anticipation in the bears how all are so intent on those poor salmons in mid air,
and actually amazing kind a words dont some up what a great image this is. Indeed a wonderful dynamic as I feel like I have watched a wildlife of NG-quality film with tons of interest, but that is cycle of life & nature. The timing is superb well frozen by high shutter speed with star of the show appeared to be eagerly anticipating the imminent arrival of his lunch.
Terrific composition, saturated color and clarity throughout making them just popping stunningly in crispy silvery water. It's well worth the effort you're so lucky to be able to take image of a beautiful creatures in their natural environment where your patience and planning is eventually rewarded. What an adventure, this must have been your brilliant catch of the day and a very honest shot that says it all which deserves of all the accolades. Topnotch, my compliments.
tatadalou (4571) 2013-12-18 21:32
In french, we have an expression that says "se jeter dans la gueule du loup' ("to throw himself in the wolf's gob") to express a situation in which you go front to the danger. These salmons illustrates so well this exprssion in your picture ! The bear on the left looks very concentrate, I like his position in the photo. Excellent sharpness and timing for shooting.
ikeharel (46944) 2013-12-19 2:14
An exquisite moment, collected here from a trip not usual for many photographers.
Only saw such action in NG series, and you superbly positioned to fully employed picture space with the cascade and bears hunting.

chrislo (3349) 2013-12-19 13:42
What a brilliant and well-timed capture of these bears fishing. I can imagine the thrill it must have been to watch these animals as they fished in the turbulent waters. I like the texture of the water and the colour of the bears contrasting against the water. The exposure is excellent showing very nice natural colours and pin sharp details. A superb nature shot. Very well done.

Ahh this is pure magic, the chance of a lifetime. How lucky you were and how lucky we are that you can share your amazing memories with us. As if the jumping salmon weren't enough, we have these magnificent grizzly bears in huge numbers, swimming and hunting them. A simply magnificent photo Way. I love it. Top marks!
Hugs and Happy Christmas to you and your loved ones
rigoletto (33749) 2013-12-20 23:23
hello wayne! beautiful babes in here! i mean, who cannot like these cute furries, provided they had a teddy bear in childhood? and as always, reading your note made me dream about a trip there, though, it would be much more difficult for me to get there than you mentioned, and i cannot think of a lost chance, like arriving there and all the ceremony is already finished... so for me, i guess it will always be some action admired in documentaries and spot on photos like yours. the immaculate timing and other technical aspects of this photo are beyond any criticism, this should be the dream of any nature photographer. 7 favs. in 4 days, WOW!
PaulVDV (18692) 2013-12-21 0:49

What an amazing wildlife sight. It is always good to see animals free in their natural environment. The bear on the left has clearly got his eye on those jumping fish! The clarity is amazing with such lovely detail in the bear and the water.
Kind Regards, Ann

Merry Christmas for you and your family.
A lively wildlife shot of the bears feeding during the Salmon run.
These bears have but three weeks for all the fish to eat and to make that she have a little bit fat for future.
Nevertheless a very good picture
Also a nice depth and perspective image with pleasant colours.
Excellent composition, lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice Sunday,

Wow! What a great capture here! Well, I guess the price of that trip is totally worthwhile!
I'd be afraid of those bears... were you close to them?!
Maybe they were all interested in all that fish coming right into their mouths! LOL

Sabaidie again Way
My deep admiration! I have seen such shots on the pages of NG or on coffee table books and this picture sits right up there, with those pictures, if not better. I looked at your pictures for a long time, reading your note twice as over...indeed its a lottery that things clicked for you...things which are not in your control, but which matter so much.
Another picture of yours which goes into my favs!

Hello Way - seems I missed quite a few of your shots in my absence! Of those I missed, this is the standout among many standouts - a lot of technical and artistic skill had to go into this. Not only to locate the shot, but to wait it out and capture just the perfect moment is really impressive. Malgo is right, this would be a great NatGeo submission. The framing, light, angle and timing are all flawless - a really special shot. You deserve all the congratulations you get here!
Kaisa71 (188) 2014-02-25 3:49
Wow....what a great once in the lifetime experience you had!! I wish I was in your boots as it must been breathtaking to see that many bears and follow their luck in salmon fishing. The photo itself is amazing sharp, and colors are natural. Good work.
