South of Bishop at the small town of Independence, a spur road from Highway 395 leads west and dead ends in Onion Valley Canyon at 9,200 feet. Within the Inyo Mountains seen here is California's second tallest - Mount Williamson at 14,375 feet.
Onion Valley is named after a wild swamp onion, whose rosy-pink flowers dot the canyon's slope in July. At the lower elevation yellow rabbitbrush and as seen here, the cottonwood provide autumn color.

The mountains alone would have made an interesting shot but the inclusion of the autumnal coloured trees raises the bar considerably; they add colour, depth and a fine focal point.
Have a good day,

A beautiful atmospheric shot from a very well chosen vantage point. The trees are well positioned, and balance the image perfectly providing scale and depth in the landscape. The bright orange birches are wonderfully complemented by the beautiful blue sky, and the rugged mountains in the background make a lovely contrast. The depth of field is well managed, keeping a good focus throughout. A beautiful and peaceful landscape.

Jeez I can't get over that you've been hiding these wee gems for us for 4 years! Finally they have emerged and allowed to take their place in the sun. The golden trees are just fabulous. We don't get Autumn colours like that, we really only have summer and winter, so imagine they are even more of a revelation to me than to a Northern Hemisphere person. Wonderful, imposing mountains and grey brown colours contrasting with a cloudless sky. Magic pure magic. Good to see it's so wild and untouched.

Good ingredients here : a wonderful landscape, beautiful autumn colours, good weather. I love the autumn trees in the FG, they catch our attention. If you moved to the right to take your picture, it would have been better I think, putting the trees on the left thirds line and having more space for the beautiful mountains in the background. Nice shot anyway, a nice place to photograph !
