This is a photo from the large Indian city of Hyderabad in 1987. Several years later Hyderabad became such an important hub for the successful Indian IT industry that it gained the nickname of Cyberabad - Cyber City.
I guess places like this are still found in Hyderabad despite the presence of modern software companies in parts of the city. Different cultures and different ways of life tend to live side by side.
I will add another picture from Hyderabad in 1987 as a workshop. Most of you will probably not like it at all.
Here is a larger version of the official upload.

Scan is extra sharp and colourful, and the scene depicts an Indian city corner quite well

Hello dear Gert,
Also this one from Hyderabad is very nice; with it's compo and many interesting details. Quite interesting the hairtail of the woman at right part. How long she may have worked on it ?
TFS and best regards

well, i certainly didn't expect to see that sign in the WS photo! just think...the fact that they even HAD to put up that sign tells you alot!!!! yikes.
but as you say, it's a fairly common occurance, thats too bad.
but it does make for a wonderful real life cultural photo.
Personally i've never heard of this city before, maybe i'm showing my ignorance there?
I'm a big fan of the grunge and grime, so these type of city scenes appeal to me. and if you can capture brightly colored apparel than thats even better.
lots to keep me interested, scanning the scene from side to side. another fine post.
leaving for Istanbul, Athens, Santorini, Rome, Venice on thursday :)

Ciao e buona serata

This scene looks superb attractive and original for me. I have never been in India so it is always great to see pictures from that colorful country. Beautifully seen and composed this street life scene. Well done!

Kia ora Gert,
Another great photo from the archives. Tells its own story. When I look back at my photos now I wish I had taken a lot more, but then in those days we were always constrained by costs - & having to wait several weeks, maybe, for the results! Cheers, Neil

I like this scene of the real daily life from the old days. The tricycle, baskets, goods and clothes of people are elements that enrich the composition.

You have a very fine vignette of life in Hyderabad, one of the busiest cities in India and plenty to look at. Great capture and shooting point to see the hustle and bustle on foot, bikes etc. a typical bazaar scenario with touch of history too, people everywhere and lots of detail and colors to absorb. Interesting and informative capture. Excellent and tfs

Hyderabad has changed immensely since 1987. It is quite a big city now and as you rightly said, very tech oriented. But places like the one above are still there.
Had been there last week, Charminar and Golconda Fort as still as charming.
Loved the scan.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

Hi Gert, Unlike Craig, I not only heard about Hyderabad, I was there and you read about my experiences here . So I ma familiar with all that you show here and specially with WS. I love India, as you know, but I do not like one thing, the guys peeing everywhere. Not only in 1987 and not only in Hyderabad. Fantastic shot, I imagine I am there in this chaos. After I will show photos from Slovakia, Austria and Spain, maybe I find some time to show something from India archiv?
Have you seen "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"? I like this film very much. The action takes place in Jaipur.

Hi Gert, Great note about this cyber city in India. Technology change for better or for worse??? Who knows!
I like the original look of this corner of the city. It keeps the old fashion way of life style and people here seems happy with the situation. Great colours and light taken with an excellent angle. Thank for sharing

My plans to search back through your gallery were pushed aside as soon as I read this title, I was instantly intrigued. Difficult to make a link between the text and imagery when it's this "old." :) And then I took a look at the WS and had a good laugh, this has turned into a terrific 2-for-1 photo! The response to such signage or warning is that "there's a reason it's there to begin with"....people have tried before!? I fully understand it's simply a language interpretation, but my mind actually views people handing off containers of urine to each other, which is what the city is apparently trying to stop from happening. haha
Because of it's significance, I would absolutely love to see how much this place has changed since 1987...has the IT boom made it more modern, or is life still the same as we see here? An image full of lively atmosphere and appeal, and one which looks great for its age. I get the impression that this would be a non-stop corner of activity. Enjoy the new day. All the best.
serp2000 (37473) 2014-05-07 23:49
Well, nobody knew in 1987 that will be an Indian silicon valley. Although I think the most people have the same life style today too. I see the Shirdi word in the center. It is the famous city and temple in India.
Kamilutka (8085) 2014-05-08 0:38
I love these oldies which you keep presenting. They show us the world which currently doesn't look the same any more. This street scene is full of life and business. Everyone seems to have purpose to hurry through the city. The mosaic of the colors, shapes and patterns makes the photo not only interesting but also quite cheerful.
Well captured and presented.
Thanks for sharing

All your pictures are almost paintings with the same colours of the old paintings.
Your scanned picture are of high quality.

ourania (25508) 2014-05-08 13:13
I like very much the candidness and vividness of this street scene, the flow of daily movement in front of the very old buildings that are still in use. It's interesting to watch the people and try to figure out what brought them there. It's lovely to see the vivid colours against the characteristic neutral tones and mysterious shadows of the buildings. I'm afraid that, just this once, I don't like the workshop picture:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,
PaulVDV (20233) 2014-05-08 14:56
Attractive daily life picture and beautiful combination of a shopping street and remnants of old, interesting architecture.
I'm not surprised by the picture in the workshop. We must not forget that in India a lot of homeless people live in a densely populated urban area. BTW, in several European cities I've seen men urinating in places where they should not, including in one of the busiest shopping streets of Brussels. I was pleased when a shopkeeper came on the street to scold at that man.
Best regards, Paul

this is a very beautiful impression of this popular place, accompanied by a nice note. I also like the title! You have captured daily life and living conditions at Hyderabad excellently. The colors make the image very attractive. My compliments!

Beautiful bazaar scene from Hyderbad .It is much different as I have been there a couple of months back.Nice colors and sharpness.Excellent POV.TFS.

It seems like a movie scene. Wonderful moments and details here. Very well done my friend.
kato (11630) 2014-05-12 10:18
You're capturing well this market by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's intereting and impressive to see the store treating vegetables or miscellaneous goods and and the residents gathering around the circumference. It's also impressive in their traditional clothes. There, a brawny feeling of a life can be taken in. I am not surprised for photograph of WS, so there are portions of light and a shadow also in what country.
willperrett (5648) 2014-05-12 13:51
Another classic street scene, with that glowing Kodachrome! By the way, if I'd seen the sign in your workshop picture, I would definitely have taken the photograph!
rogerl (1526) 2014-05-13 5:40
Gert, this is a great scan, very clear with reasonable colors. It shows a nice street life scene, with the people shopping at the market right in front of an ancient building. In most places, such a building would be preserved, without bills posted, but not in India...Thanks.
PiotrF (3888) 2014-05-13 9:39

Interesting scene of everyday life of the place.Colours and sharpness are perfect made.Excellent composition and perfect presentation.

photographer_sg (2542) 2014-05-14 5:44
another superb capture so full of colours and life! the old building makes a fantastic backdrop for the market scene with its people, vendors, rickshaw and the vegetable baskets. you managed superbly what looks like typical Indian scorching sunlight :).
thanks for sharing and have a nice evening.

Firstly, I DO like the photo in the WS and am glad you included it. I may never go to Hyder/Cyderbad and certainly will not go back to 1987 so love to see those glimpses of distant places especially if they show something you won't find on Wikipedia or Google images!
It's a nice street photo where lots of things are happening at the same time, with many different objects and colours included in the frame. Never been there but I think you conveyed the atmosphere of the place very well.
adores (33924) 2014-06-16 18:16
A market and beautiful old architecture - perfect combination! This is an old and colourful daily scene with so many details.
I also like the Ws a lot and I guess it deserves to be a main post!
daddo (22352) 2014-06-28 23:53
Hi Gert. Another treasure from the past with its own patina. The local shops, mixture of Hindus and Muslims, various modes of transport, ancient architecture- so much to take in. As for the workshop, hopefully the bladders and bowels will be relieved in more hygienic ways as the new prime minister has promised to build thousands of toilets across India. No more relieving oneself in stairways belonging to others.Regards. Klaudio.
