Am I the only one who's thinking where the heck did 2013 go?! Seriously, the older I get the quicker the years go by, and it astounds me every New Years when I look back at how fast the previous 12 months passed.
I didn't really have a 'celebration' or fireworks type of photo to post for 2014 New Years, so I thought this would be the road I'd take (no pun intended)
There are several high quality motion-blur panning shots posted on TE, many of which are from India or China. My photo today doesn't even come close to those, but I wanted to post my first try at it.
There's another in the WS if you're interested.
Lets hope 2014 slows down a bit so we can enjoy it that much more.
Happy New Years!

Not bad for your first attempt at motion blur I'd reckon. I have tried the technique on several occasions myself but alas to not much avail.
As you say, the motif is perfect to summon up the passing of the years. Like you I have the feeling that the years pass faster with every passing year. Must definitely be a sign of age.
Even though I haven't any green smilies left for today, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and the many useful comments over the past year.
May the new year bring happiness, joy and health to you and your family and many an exiting trip to enjoy.
Greetings from Switzerland

A happy new year, and yes I do echo your thoughts, where does the time go? Not only that, but 2014! We live in the future! Growing up in the 80's I read Judge Dredd comics and the year 2000 seemed so far away. Now its long in the past. Funny how that happens. Love your shot to celebrate the passing of the year too, very original and a nice piece of motion blur, something I always admire. Fine car too. The motion makes my head spin a little, but I don't know if that is purely the effect of the picture, or partially down to a mild hangover :)
Have a great year

Well...all the people I know are having the same problem:2013 gone too fast...well, not exactly the best year for me but I hope for a more successful new one.
Lovely dynamic image to illustrate your idea.

Photo with excellent symbolism to usher in the New Year, I do not miss the fireworks at all. Time really flies by, on my birthdays I really don't know what to do celebrate, or rue the fact that I grew older by another year :)Fantastic motion blur shot and I like the car as well, its a bit battered and bruised but it is still running.
I hope time slows down for you in 2014 so that you can enjoy each and every moment of the New Year.
Thanks for sharing and wish you a very Happy and Healthy 2014.

A nice pan-blur shot. The viewer still gets a good appreciation of Havana's architecture and the slight upward tilt is very effective in giving motion to your picture.
Happy New Year,

Très bon bon filé pour l'image de ce véhicule ancien.
Bonne année 2014

I love the sense of movement conveyed by your photo, it's very vivid and captivating. The shape and details of the car are attractive and significant, it's great that we can see the people through the windows too. The colours and lines of the urban environment provide an interesting, contrasting setting. I also like very much the soft, homogeneous lighting and the car's shadow. The workshop picture is exciting and delightful as well. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, a very happy year full of love and health for you and your dear ones!

good idea, nice title. I like the photo. I always promise myself to try something like this but I never do. Here obviously you got a great subject. One more Cuban car. It is full of patches which means it has a rich history and it make it photogenic. Great blur around it!
Have a happy New Year with plenty of travel and exciting photo opportunities,
icesurfer (550) 2014-01-01 12:41
Your first try at panning came out really well!
I really like the overall effect: the car seems quite old and it probably has seen much better days, but here it seems to be competing in a racecourse!
npecanhuk (73494) 2014-01-01 15:35
I really enjoy that! I've already tried to do something similar but never achieved anything that great!
The details of the car itself and all the blur around it are so eye-catching and were masterfully done by you!
TFS - congrats,

Hi dear Craig
A HAPPY NEW YEAR 20014!
Where and whern this shot is taken? Oh In Havana, I agree. High technique for flow shot is highly appreciated. So nostlgy simage indeed. I want to be there in some day!
All the best and have a good day! TAKERO

hello Craig, for sure, you are not the only one who thinks like this. And I can tell you, that the older you are, the faster the years pass one after another. ..i like your title here, very appropriate. And such anice photo to illustrate it. Is it called panning shot?
All the best in 2014
COSTANTINO (62697) 2014-01-02 0:03
the right shot for the right timing
your thoughts are interesting and
I agree too
lets hope that 2014 will be
better than 2013
many wishes for health and happiness
CLODO (33422) 2014-01-02 1:50
Good attenmpt to have a car in another situation, your panning is well executed and the blurred BG is perfect. Both are interesting, but the big blue car is more in the Cuba mood!
All the best for 2014!
eldancer1 (35535) 2014-01-02 7:36
Yes, it seems like 2013 was just a blur and I hope 2014 will be better and more enjoyable. Nice capture of this classic with good panning technique. Well done, tfs.
sevy (15367) 2014-01-02 7:46
Nice effect of following on the car, it is well sharing the idea of movemen and speed.
Gigidusud (19939) 2014-01-02 10:11
An original greetings card, great idea! Indeed, the years go by too fast! Excellent motion capture, I like the WS too. Thanks!
Happy New Year 2014 for you and your!
bona (13711) 2014-01-02 16:13
what a great panning photo. Love the moviment you got. The old style car have a pretty color.
Waylim (25488) 2014-01-02 18:43
Sure it went by so fast it seem like a blur. For you, it seems you have been to and visited many country. While the year may be a blur, but you gallery are full of sharp images. I love hte sense of motion here and a fine symboic image to bit farewell to the year.
Wishing you the best for 2014.

Ciao Craig, great panning of fascinating old car, excellent movie effect, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, Happy New Year, ciao Silvio
tyro (23590) 2014-01-03 18:03
For a "first go" at panning, this is a damn good shot!!
I love how this old American car seems to fly along the road against a background of blurred buildings. The car and its driver are perfectly sharp and clear too. You've done jolly well to catch this so sharply at 1/10 second: I'm not sure what speed the car was doing but I guess I would probably have been a bit more conservative and gone for something like 1/60th.
This is truly Brilliant!
Have a Wonderful 2014!
P.S. Funnily enough, I was doing a bit of idle browsing and came across a brilliant picture of yours - the narrowest street in Sweden which you posted in the days when you were "macjake2000". I wrote a critique, of course! :o)
adores (43903) 2014-01-09 16:24
Different and very nice! I like the old car and the motion you captured, seems it still moves:)! A good capture!
Yes, time runs too fast, we'd better live every moment the best way we can!
Have a great New Year!
subhendu_bagchi (26085) 2014-01-11 4:56
a nice way to say bye to the previous year. The year passed as the blurred background... A nicely tried panning shot. Enjoyed it a lot. Tfs.
Belated wish for the new year. Take care.
jemaflor (93299) 2014-01-11 8:36
Good dynamic result with this panning well managed, interesting colors contrast, nice old car, tfs.
Hansaphotos (7687) 2014-01-16 12:27
What a great panning shot of this old car. Love the gangster look of the car. The sense of movement is well captured. A very nice first panning shot from your hand. Great work! Thanks.
jcpix (13846) 2014-01-19 21:05
Vroooom! This is cool! It may not be one of those muscle cars, but you've sure made it appear like it can fly just as fast. :)
I've tried this technique many, many times...but have never come close to getting this kind of sweet result. Hard to believe this was your first attempt at panning, this turned out great! I would have loved it regardless, but the fact you chose a blue colored car was perfect...my color preference makes this even better for me to see. :)
I'm obviously a bit behind on this one, but it sure has made for a fun and apt way to ring in the new year, as the old one sure enough did pass quickly!? Love the sensation of speed and action with the blur. Really neat shot! Enjoy the day ahead. take care.
clic (16628) 2014-01-23 11:31
I tried motion blur near a small airport on a Cessna 172 by a clear sky and the backdrop turned out... quite satisfying!!!
More seriously, this achievement of yours at 1/10s inspires me to try the technique.
fotoguy22 (4794) 2014-02-23 18:20
Hey Craig: As a sports photographer I am a big fan of motion blur (I posted one sort of like this yesterday). However, most of the sports photos I take need for the action to be frozen and because it is necessary to take a LOT of motion blur photos to get just ONE good one I don't have the luxury of dedicating a lot of time and effort to get that one shot.
The great thing about a well-executed shot like this one is that an f-stop of 16 or 22 or 29 can be used yet the subject is separated from the blurry background, almost like using f2.8 or f4. The blue car against the subdued shades of brown is very effective.
Yes, I am getting geared up for baseball season. I'll be shooting college baseball in California next month and then back to Florida for minor league baseball in April.
Greetings from Florida................Greg
