Gyumri is the second largest city in Armenia and the capital of the Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. As of the 2009 official estimate, the city had a population of 146,400.
The name of the city has been changed several times throughout the history. It was first known as Kumayri and later Gyumri, then Alexandropol between 1837–1924, then Leninakan between 1924–1990, then again as Gyumri.
The city suffered major damage during the 1988 Spitak earthquake which killed 25,000 people.
