Well this is my second post to celebrate Guimarães as 2012 European Capital of Culture.
In this image it is written in the granite old city wall: “Aqui Nasceu Portugal” which means in a free translation: “Here, Portugal was born” .
The tower on the left belongs to the famous Saint Peter`s Church in Toural Square from where I shoot and posted here

As you probably know The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which it organises a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension.
Preparing a European Capital of Culture it is always an opportunity for a city to create considerable cultural, social and economic benefits.
This event will certainly help Guimarães urban regeneration, enhancing the city's image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale. In fact the The historic town of Guimarães is associated with the emergence of the Portuguese national identity in the 12th century.
An exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town, its rich building typology exemplifies the specific development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to 19th century through the consistent use of traditional building materials and techniques.
