The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of North Queensland, is of course covered in coral. 348,000 square kilometres of it, to be exact, making it the largest living thing on Earth. There are many different species of coral, but they fall into 3 main sub groups: the Hermatypic, Ahermatypic and Perforate. They feed on plankton and small fish. On the day I took this, the sky was very overcast. Usually this will not affect what you see underwater, but I found that the coral colour was not as bright as I remember it.

Super close-up on a just a small part of the Great Barrier Reef. The detail is quite amazing. I like the close framing and the division of the image into three contrasting tonal areas. Have a great weekend.

Beautiful Mashroom type Coral, superbly taken underwater.
Blue BG decorating, and superb close view in details.
Enjoy your weekend,

Attractive up close candid and glimpse of your wonderful underwater kingdom. The dominant coral umbrella like and staghorn (?) adjacent are resolute and in natural coloring. Being familiar with coral in the Hawaiian Islands, these two guys are unique to me because they do not exist there.
Protection of the coral worlds is very important not just for the aesthetics but for the life of interconnecting plants and animals. Or at least I lesson I learned in college Ecology many many moons ago.
and have a great weekend,

How lucky you are to have this wonder of nature just in front of your doorstep. Even if you say that the colors are not what you remember having seen, it is still gorgeous.
I just do hope that the great barrier reef, and by that all coral reefs actually , can be saved for the future. They are such a fragile eco system after all.
have a great weekend

a title that I have to admit gets my crazy imagination running wild :-). Needless to say it is a place that I would love to visit and this shot makes that all the more tempting, even though I have a fear of getting out of my depth. The clarity of the ocean and beauty here are awesome! Classic place and imagery!
Have a peaceful Sunday - B.

It really is another world under the sea, a beautiful world. I have never dived, but the shots you have posted makes me want to so much, especially in the beautiful seas of Australia. Amazing how we can go and visit an alien world so easily, and the shots to be sen are awesome. This is a really beautiful capture of this watery forest. There is a bush in my gardn that looks a little like this :)
Have a great new week!

Ciao Lisa, Another splendid underwater shot. How can anyone even think about destroying such marvel? The most beautiful are for me swuch soft corals, like on the left side. In the place of my snorkelling there were only few of them.
Warm regards Malgo

what a spectacular sight! You have captured the coral excellently. The photographer’s perspective is excellent. My compliments also for the composition. The result was worth all your efforts!

Surprise when I opened the thumb, it's amazing capture thru the Glass and to think how fragile the living coral is. Another grand marine image we have here, full of gorgeous colours and delicate all round that I can almost feel the movement of the 'bushes' I think difficult light conditions have not been kind to you but the darker part I find is meaningful adding the necessary depth and just enough light to make it interesting. Tricky light indeed but you've pulled off a really nice shot, Congrats.
