as a matter of principle I do not take photos of churches even though they are magnificent works of Architecture...... but during my last stay in England I saw that many churches have been converted into private dwellings with their own cemetery by the entrance door !!!!!
however some other have been converted to restaurants
here we are looking at the Bel & the Dragon.... in my opinion approaching this building during the daytime is a bit daunting ... but during the evening is far more pleasant.I would also say that is not easy for an Architect to introduce changes and decorate the inside for the purpose of a restaurant..... in this case they did a magnificent job and we had the best dinner during our stay in England.

Hello Gus, Why you do not take the photos of churches?? I make a lot of photos of churches, mosques, wats, pagodas and so on, as you can easily guess :). For me it is strange that the church can be converted in the hotel or restaurant. It is impossible in Poland. interesting note and fantastic shot, I like this ivy creeping the walls.
WArm regards for you and Dawn MAlgo

I am glad you made an exception for this church because it is quite charming. The architecture is really interesting but what I like the most about it is the ivy covering the walls. You had lovely light which makes the colors warmer and more attractive.
Thanks for sharing

looks pretty attractive especially with the ivy creeping up. I miss the bright colors right now. Strange people... I would never take delight in sleeping or eating with a cemetery at my porch.
A well-taken shot, hope you enjoyed the weather.
Now who's your pick for the wtf title?:))

This is an excellent capture of the church, taken from a good angle with perfect sharpness and attractive colours.
Because the church attendance has strongly declined in Belgium, there are a lot of churches that no longer serve as a prayer house. Here also a few of them have been converted to a restaurant.
I have to admit that I don't understand why in principle you don't take any pictures of churches. There are so many beautiful churches and cathedrals in the world, as well as mosques and temples of other religions. You don't have to confess the same religion or to agree with what you show on the picture, to draw our attention to something beautiful or peculiar or special or just something that keeps you busy.
Best regards, Paul

A fine church and its architectural beauty created by the diagonal lines, this looks very tranquil scene and what an enterprising ideas! I think you have benefited much from the situation there showing summer colours at its best and the mouth watering polarised blue sky is so well filled. It's very well composed and of course your first class light and shadow controlled and composed. Awesome and seamlessly done, great notes too. Congrats

Such a beautiful edifice converted into a restaurant, and I wonder why you wrote it was "daunting" to approach? the place looks intriguing and interesting. Maybe in a town that called GODALMING, starts with the G-O-D letters has a heavenly supervision and safeguarding... so people can do whatever they wish.
Fine shot in great bright daylight.
Have a nice weekend,

Lovely light capture, beautiful colors to present this church, perfect sharpness, good angle.
josepmarin (57911) 2013-11-13 3:46
Pili & Josep

The view up to the church is clever. The composition is well chosen, with excellent combination of light and colors and perfect deep depth of field. I like the clear blue color of the sky because it contrasts nicely with the browns and greens in the photo. Bravo.

You're capturing well this architecture by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the church which converted into restaurant. It seems to architecture with simple design and beautiful window. It's also tasteful for the green moss on wall. And, it harmonizes beautifully with blue sky.

Hello Gus - This is an interesting shot and particularly because the church has been recycled as a restaurant... that tells us a lot about shifting attitudes in England doesn't it? I have a brother who converted a small nunnery into a home, I think he did quite a successful job marrying the lovely old features and still making a comfortable place to live in. Your shot shows the building off under the most favourable conditions, good light and a lovely blue sky result in an attractive well balanced shot. The building is lovely and I am curious as to the name of the restaurant; The Bell and Dragon, I wonder if it is named for some features in the building? Warm regards Rosmary

Here I've seen churches that became bars, supermarkets, barns...Looking at this one, I believe it must be very interesting inside also. A good shot, the pov, light and colours are great!

What a fabulous meal we had ourselves in this Church that has been converted into a gourmet restaurant... it was memorable.
You managed to capture a perfect shot considering the brightness of the day & how frustrating it was that the cars just kept driving by - making it difficult to get a photo - your perseverance certainly paid off!!
The colours, clarity, your POV & the overall content all perfect & the ivy looks lovely on this beautiful old converted Church.
I love it!!!
MUCHOS LUV... Dawn.

it was pretty hard to resist this photo from your gallery....its all about the fantastic light and exposure that drew me to it.
the light and colors are super, the 2 sets of doors really sparkle and take notice, as do the green colors.
lovely sky too, whats not to like!
