“And now for something completely different” (sorry about that but I’ve got Monty Python on my mind after learning that the renowned British comics are set to stage a reunion show at the O2 in London) What I mean is that this shot is not at all my kind of thing but by way of a change I thought that some of you may like this colourful chap. He’s not a python and he’s not a character from Lisa’s beloved Dr Who, he is a Red Headed Rock Agama sunning himself on a wall in Etosha.
As the name suggests, these Agamas are brightly coloured with a red head. This is true for dominate males; they have an orange to red head with a blue body with some white speckles along the back. They are a semi desert dwelling species that live within rock crevices. If close to man, they may even live within their huts or gardens.
The males are territorial, claiming small to medium patches of land which they defend against other mature males. Juveniles and females reside within the territories unchallenged. The mature males become agitated when confronting each other, nodding vigorously, arching, skipping sideways, and clashing tails. The loser is chased out of the territory. During mating season, males do "push-ups" to attract females.

What a cute little fellow.
I remember seeing one in Australia ,(or if not, very similar) but just grey when we were walking in the forest
`Ours`was on a huge rock and was lifting one leg at a time, which we were told later was to cool it as the rock was very hot in the blazing sun.T.F.S.
Brought back many happy memories.Thankyou., also for your kind comments.

Belle capture de cette étonnante bestiole bicolore qui semble faire la belle devant l'objectif de la photographe.

hello Rosemary, it is fantastic! I like reptiles so I was delighted to see many of them (some deadly :)) in Australia, but no in Africa. Wonderful presentation of this red headed guy. Stunning sharpness, nice blurred background.
Warm regrads Malgo

I pride myself in knowing what this little fella is called. We came across quite a lot of them in Namibia but I didn't get a picture as good as this. I like the way it is showing us that cheeky little back foot - I think it is a Rock Agama with attitude.
You have photographed this very well with great colour and an out of focus BG. Excellent.
The Monty Python team were interviewed on TV and some of them are aging better than others. I am not sure how good that they will be when reunited.
Best wishes, Ann

A really nice close-up of the agama. The abrupt colour change from red to blue is really intense on this cool looking lizard that you captured so well. Excellent point of view, super sharp focus and fine details of scales on its brightly coloured body standing out so wonderfully against the blurred background. Very well done.
Have a nice Sunday.

Ciao e buona domenica

You should have lidded that tin of orange paint!
Just joking! He certainly looks as if his head and body don't belong together! What a fashion statement!
Your narrow dof have worked well to keep this guy sharp against a great bokeh.
The wall is a good compositional element for your thirds!
Have a great Sunday,
siudzi (34141) 2013-11-24 1:46
Wow! What a superb species here! You have achieved an excellent nature study with using DOF, clarity and saturation so perfectly to reach a fantastic capture. Like it a lot!
Have a nice day!
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-11-24 2:03
you´re right-something completely different,but how captivating!
The lizard looks amazing with its red head.Certainly something original from what we used to see from Namibia.
I like your close-up view as well as superb quality of the image and so nice bokeh.
Have a nice sunday
rigoletto (34279) 2013-11-24 2:12
hi rosemary. did you know that this species is sold as a pet, because it resembles spider man? :) good focus and dof on this unique subject.
snunney (100774) 2013-11-24 2:25
This is a great close-up on this colourful creature adopting a rather haughty pose. Fine control over depth of field to isolate it from the background. Colours and the rendering of the textural detail in the skin are both superb. Thanks for sharing.
delpeoples (58600) 2013-11-24 3:33
hehehehe ah this gave ma a giggle. He looks like a super hero in an orange mask, leaping tall buildings in a single bound. What a cuties and how well you have captured him. It truly is like he's posed for you doing his best Blue Steel impersonation from Derek Zoolander. This is adorable, it's different and gosh it's funny! Love the Monty Python reference too :)
Gigidusud (21151) 2013-11-24 3:34
Amazing colorful creature! Great capture, I like it!
Have a nice Sunday,
timecapturer (49288) 2013-11-24 3:43
Yep! Totally different and so perfectly captured and presented. What a colourful little fellow and a poser too! Looks decidedly arrogant here in his Sunday best. Magic image Rosemary, and captured superbly.
Enjoy your Sunday - B.
yquem46 (38752) 2013-11-24 4:21
An excellent one of this lizard with such amazing colors, certainly not the kind we meet in Europe
I like its attitude looking at you from one eye and its posture with its back leg on the wall
Nice neutral out of focus BG
Best regards, have a nice sunday

On tumbnail I was thinking it's a plastic toy !
The natüre is a great teacher.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Quelle jolie bestiole. Je ne crois pas en avoir jamais vu de semblable. Assez difficile de passer inaperçu avec une tête de cette couleur. Le point de vue, le cadrage et la netteté sont excellents.
HimalAnda (10669) 2013-11-24 5:59
This lizard has strange colors! This red head is totally different than the blue body. Amazing.
Good POV with a perfect blurred background.
Highmountains (2674) 2013-11-24 7:32
The sharpness and clarity of the photograph is excellent. The details of the wall, and the shimmer of the skin of the colourful Agama is well captured.
And I reiterate my view that you have a very interesting and wide variety of photographs.
Thanks for sharing, Rosemary.
jcpix (13930) 2013-11-24 8:07
Now this was a fun little surprise to see from you, certainly unexpected...but none the less following your precision and detail.
What an interesting fellow this is, quite colorful and intriguing to say the least. I particularly like the upwards angle you've chosen here to make him appear "grand" and quite proud in stature. :) I certainly wouldn't want to tangle with those claws, small in size but big in strength I'm sure!!
Great depth of field also, the blurred background helps keep all focus right where it should be to enjoy the splendid detail and color of each scale. Hope you're having a nice weekend. Take good care.
Can never go wrong with a Monty Python reference either. :)
ourania (47136) 2013-11-24 8:14
this is such a delightful and interesting picture, a real character portrait that instantly evokes a story and captivates the viewer. I love how you've included a fair amount of the bar or wall the charming creature has been caught climbing. The blurry background makes him stand out for its attractive colours, textures and dynamic posture. You've managed the light superbly. He seems to have a meaningful expression and to be as surprised to see us as we are:) His name is fantastic! Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Noel_Byrne (31668) 2013-11-24 8:29
I thought from the thumbnail that he was a teeny tine scarecrow with an orange head :) What a cool little creature. I am a fan of lizards, I think they are really beautiful animals, and the colors on this guy are so eyecatching. Love the shadow of his claws on the left side too, very Nightmare on Elm street! Beautiful focusing!
All the best
cebe (1491) 2013-11-24 9:33
Hello Rosemary. Funny and amazing match-looking animal. (Reminded me when I was working on the ice in the Arctic; after a few weeks, we had the face very brown and the body very white!) Nice sharp photo and good with the blurred background. In addition to being a pleasing image, it has a strong descriptive side too, and an interesting note accompanies it. Kind regards, Claude.
PaulVDV (29533) 2013-11-24 9:55
The masked lizard!
It must be very difficult for this little animal not to stand out in its surroundings.
Best regards, Paul
holmertz (54315) 2013-11-24 11:09
This looks like a new American super hero, coming soon to a theatre near you: Lizard-Man. When will we see the sequel and prequel?
A marvellous photo from a perfect POV. I saw lots of reasonably similar lizards in West Africa where they were everywhere especially in Mali, although not quite as bright. I never got any picture anywhere as good as this.
worldcitizen (8814) 2013-11-24 11:47
This is definitely different! I have never seen a lizard with such amazing colors before. It reminds me of the rainbow lorikeet parrot. Beautiful focus on this lovely creature. He seems to like the camera. :-) I like the chosen presentation as well, with the ledge and softly-blurred background.
tyro (25714) 2013-11-24 12:14
Like yourself, I'm not a great Dr. Who fan but I am certainly a great fan of Monty Python. I love this fellow here but, while thinking of Monty Python, I wonder if this might just have been a little better had he been pictured amidst some "shrubbery"??
No, really, this is a fabulous photograph and you have captured this amazing creature perfectly, standing out as he does against a perfectly out of focus and non-distracting background. The light on him is delightful, bringing out all his amazing colours and I really love the shadows of his spindly toes on the rail on which he is standing.
Glorious light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
dekanski (5578) 2013-11-24 12:18
Just short: GREAT MACRO!!!!
marabu61 (11061) 2013-11-24 13:04
He looks more Superman to me than the doctor ...
Charming little fellow with interesting colors indeed. My father was a big fan of all exotic animals and I grew up with Pythons, Iguanas and Tarantulas, even a common Agame in a simple brownish color was among the collection, so this one is an interesting example for me.
Perfectly sharp shot with the background beautifully out of focus to give it the deserved center stage.
have a great week
PS: Glad that Monty Python are back too..
parvatibb (1387) 2013-11-24 13:12
looks like he is wearing a mask. Very different and strange. great DOF!
carlo62 (50101) 2013-11-24 14:22
questa specie di Spiderman sembra molto sicuro di se, ha un atteggiamento molto sicuro e scontroso.
Bella cattura e bei colori, anche se non è il tuo genere di foto, hai ottenuto un eccellente risultato.
zoomer (6) 2013-11-24 16:09
Hi,such a beautiful and interesting specimen!Great colors and detail, all the best Wolf.
williewhistler (16398) 2013-11-25 2:34
it would appear that you have the ability to cross over into Natural History photography without any problem..
This little chap is so sharp and clear in a perfect pose, the colours are gorgeous and the BG suitably OOF,my only weeny niggle is the light spot on the top edge that I would probably have cloned out.
It is nonetheless simply stunning.
Kind regards Les.
PS Love the note.
haydn (276) 2013-11-25 15:41
that's very interesting and amazing animal..it's colours
and skin texture are so incredible..and also the wall texture is very nice.superb quality of the image and so nice bokeh.

Ciao Rosemary, great capture of alien creature, fantasatic colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
mkamionka (37831) 2013-11-28 5:38
what a beautiful creature! It has truly unique colored body. Who could have invented such a combination! Orange and blue! You captured it very well in a nice pose as if jumping across the fence. It fits the frame diagonally making it very eye catching.
Very well done!
Hansaphotos (8223) 2013-12-01 2:33
I`m trying to catch up with all the photos posted in my absent period. Superb close-up of this interesting animal. With its orange and blue outfit it stands out very well against the blurred background. Truly a beautiful shot of the creation. Splendid colours and sharpness. Excellent:) Thanks.
Enjoy your Sunday.
adores (45715) 2013-12-07 15:27
It's good to post something different once in a while!
They are really nice with the two colours and the pose is perfect here. A very good capture! I like the colours and textures!
Didi (60588) 2013-12-09 10:35
Very good catch of this original reptile
Good selective DOF
clic (17269) 2013-12-16 7:18
You show the best of a rare specimen on the appropriate backdrop that could be mistaken for a new costume designed for a remade movie of Spiderman, given the fact it appears ready to jump upwards from the sidewalk!!
A feast for biologists, showing claws and keeping an eye on your camera; thanks for showing in an elegant diagonal posture.
