Photographer's Note

Fourth day of our trip in Iceland. We leave Vik in the morning and follow the Road 1 to the east along teh south coast of Iceland. Before Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the Road 1 crosses huge Eldhraun lave fields, born from the terrific Lakagigar eruption in 1783.

On this second trip to Iceland I passed by places I had already seen one year ago on my first trip, including these Lakagigar lava fields. But we were lucky because most of the time we had not at all the same light and saw these places with a different atmosphere. Last year when we passed there we had quite beautiful weather, the sun gave nice colours to the moss on lava blocks. But this year, we had showers and small sunnyspells, so we had to hunt for sunbeams ! But the atmosphere was just incredible ! Like on this photo, where a few sunbeams light lava blocks while the horizon is full of dark threatening clouds. To take this photo I climbed on a rocky promontory to dominate the road 1 that crossed the lava fields. Then I just had to wait for the light ...
