Toddy Seller : On a clear winter morning this old impoverished man was seen selling fresh toddy juice near the Digha Beach. The skinny old man undernourished and thin with old age had garnered all his courage to move his old limbs and be on the street to sell toddy juice to tourists for a few bucks. The juice preserved inside two black earthen pots ( Only one is visible in this image) and held steady on the weak shoulders of the old man by a bamboo stick.Normally fermented palm toddy juice is consumed as an intoxicant and as a cheap substitute for hard liquor ,but this old man had fresh juice extracted a few hours back from his own trees in the nearby village. The fermented palm toddy juice is called Tari in eastern India and is consumed widely all over the world, but mostly in tropical countries of Asia and Africa.
