The archaeological site of the ancient sanctuary of Delphi, at the foot of Mount Parnassus in a really wonderful and breathtaking landscape.

The Cretans brought to this place the cult of the Pythian Apollo (Piton killer) and as a famous Homeric hymn in the seventh century BC, some became Panhellenic sanctuary and oracle. To be taken by the Phocians Cirra port (Itea today), the Athenians began Sacred War (597-585 BC) to retrieve the sanctuary.

They were a religious confederation, called Amphictyony, and instituted the Pythian games, which were held every four years from the year 586. The temple was destroyed in 548 by a fire and was quickly rebuilt by national subscription. Then the domain of the shrine was taken over by the Alcmaeonidae expelled from Athens.

In the year 448, after the restoration of the temple to the Phocians carried out by Pericles Sacred War II broke out. Temple destroyed by the earthquake of 373, held the third reconstruction and the third sacred war, caused by the looting perpetrated by the Phocian Philomel. The fourth holy war took place between 339 and 338 BC, and was a good opportunity for the offensive end of the Macedonian Philip II, against Greece. At the Macedonian domination followed, in 279 BCE that of the Aetolians and the year 191 BC, the Romans. The sanctuary was plundered by Sila and Nero and was later closed by Theodosius in 381.

The present building of the Sanctuary of Apollo is the sixth and last of those built in the same place, was conducted in the fourth century BC It is based on a large base of 60 m. length and 4.50 m. in height. The building períptero, Doric and hexastyle (60.32 x28, 32 m) with six columns on the fronts and fifteen on the sides, of which six are conserved. In the pronaos were engraved the famous sentence also of the Seven Sages, "Know thyself," "Nothing is too much" and so on. And he kept a bronze statue of Homer. In the adyton is guarding the Omphalos and held the ceremony of the oracle.

El yacimiento arqueológico del antiguo santuario de Delfos, se encuentra al pie del monte Parnaso en un paisaje realmente maravilloso e impresionante.

Los cretenses llevaron a este lugar el culto de Apolo Pitio (matador de Piton) y según un famoso himno homérico, en el siglo VII a.C., aproximadamente se convirtió en santuario y oráculo panhelenico. Al ser tomado por los focenses del puerto de Cirra (hoy dia Itea), los atenienses comenzaron la primera guerra sagrada (597-585 a.C.) para recuperar el santuario.

Constituyeron una confederación religiosa, llamada Anfictionía, e instituyeron los juegos píticos, que se celebraban cada cuatro años a partir del año 586. El templo fue destruido en el 548 por un incendio y rápidamente fue reconstruido por suscripción nacional. Más tarde el dominio del santuario pasó a manos de los Alcmeónidas expulsados de Atenas.

En el año 448, tras la restitución del templo a los focenses llevada a cabo por Pericles, estalló la segunda guerra sagrada. Destruido el templo por el terremoto del año 373, se llevó a cabo la tercera reconstrucción y la tercera guerra sagrada, causada por el saqueo perpetrado por el focense Filomelo. La cuarta guerra sagrada tuvo lugar entre los años 339 y 338 a.C., y fue una buena ocasión para la ofensiva final del macedonio Filipo II contra Grecia. Al dominio macedonio siguió, en el año 279 a.C. el de los etolios y en el año 191 a.C., el de los romanos. El santuario fue saqueado por Sila y Nerón y después fue cerrado por Teodosio en el año 381.

El actual edificio del Santuario de Apolo es el sexto y último de los construidos en este mismo lugar, fue realizado en el siglo IV a.C. Se sustenta sobre un gran basamento de 60 m. de longitud y 4,50 m. de altura. Es un edificio períptero, dórico y hexástilo (60,32x28,32 m.) con seis columnas en los frentes y quince en los lados, de las que se conservan seis. En el pronaos estaban grabadas las famosas sentecias de los Siete Sabios: “Conócete a ti mismo”, “Nada es demasía” etc. Y se conservaba una estatua en bronce de Homero. En el ádyton se custodiaba el ónfalos y se celebraba la ceremonia del oráculo.
