‘Damme - Damme Canal in early spring # 2’
Hereby my second picture of the Damme Canal.
This region in northwestern Belgium designated by its specific landscapes has already been put on the screen so often and so beautifully by John (jhm) that my previous picture was immediately recognized as a typical view of his home region.
Recently I visited Damme for the first time in my life and it's nice to find out that this exceptionally beautiful region is known so well by many TE members.
You may be surprised to know that this picture was taken in the center of Damme. At the time the canal was constructed straight through the town with the adverse result that a large part of its center was demolished, including the ‘Korenmarkt’ (‘Corn Market’) and many beautiful mansions.
The Damme Canal (Damse Vaart) is a canal in the north of the province of West Flanders. It links Bruges with the Dutch border town of Sluis.
It’s also called the ‘Napoleonvaart’ because it was constructed on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. His intention was to create a canal network in order to permit a quick supply for the French soldiers without the risk of a confrontation with the British navy at sea.
After his defeat, however, the construction wasn’t further completed.
A less pretty fact is that this construction was carried out by Spanish prisoners, descendants of the previous rulers in the Low Countries.

Hello Paul - I like the way the lines of water, trees and sky radiate out from the distant point of perspective like spokes from a wheel. A very good compositional element punctuated by the small jetty and attractive little building. Beautiful colours and contrast. The tress look fabulous against the blues. Warm regards Rosemary

Goeie morgen Paul,

Lovely saturated colors of the early spring days. I like the perspective and the elements of this composition. Well done!

Goed foto werk, bedankt.

Ciao e buona serata

Hello Paul, the white house is well positioned in a well chosen composition with good use being made of the vertical corners to give the image depth and drama.
Very nice photography.Well done.

Very nice shot. Great exposure, superb colors and lights you captured here. Very well done.

Very classy and elegant presentation of this early spring landscape. Like the way you managed the light and colors here to achieve such a strong saturation result. Very well done. TFS.

Sensational image with fantastic POV, which captures all these diagonals that form both the channel and the lines of trees that are lost in the distance, creating a great DOF. The small house in the foreground adds a touch exquisite.
Very nice range of colors.
Superb brightness and sharpness.
Have a good evening.

Beautiful spring photography. By the canal is a small, white house. Its cool white contrasts with the image of a little dark tones. Excellent image quality.

Erg mooie kleuren ook, goede foto !

Another fine shot from this canal. You have thought hard about the composition and have positioned the features strongly within the frame. There is an excellent sense of depth as the canal guides us into the distance and the diminishing trees give that fine sense of perspective.
Your historical notes were very interesting. What an effect other nations seem to have had on our homelands.
Have a lovely day,

I see you´ve done something in John´s(jhm)style. And I can only say your approach to this topic is more than successful.I like especially the long perspective with so cleverly placed canal, which creates so eye-catching depth. Also so delightful colors are essential for the scene and final result.
Have a good day

Wonderful image of the river and the trees.I like the contrast and the high quality of your image. Superb presentation, very sharp shot with an excellent light and POV. TFS.

the bright little house and the little jetty behind it give us intriguing reference and offer colours and textures not readily expected from this place. Maybe it's the brightness of their colours that strikes the most but the familiar textures and colours of the well known scenery are there to delight us as well. I like very much your composition and the way you've used perspectives to captivate the viewer and bring balance within the frame. The alternation of blue and brown hues around the luminous focal point of the house is lovely. Light and contrast management are superb. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

As you mention, this picture has a feeling of John's photos, with its tree-lined canal captured in a diagonal line.
However, there is your personal touch in it. I like the bare trees against the bright blue sky and canal and the cute little cottage built on a platform to avoid floods I suppose.
Thanks for this beautiful photo and the very interesting note.
bayno (18342) 2013-05-10 7:05
excellent choose of POV and compo, i like so much the blue tones of the sky, so nice perspective and fine details...very good light too...
ChrisJ (96568) 2013-05-11 4:03
Excellent sharpness and very good compositional use of diminishing linear perspective and vanishing point. A superb exposure on the bright white highlights of the building at right with negligible oe and punchy light contrasts. Nice repetition of the trees along the canal banks. Tfs!
Cricri (105215) 2013-05-11 9:18

Salut cher Paul
Such beautiful rich colours, amazing textures and an immaculate perspective created by the line of the canal and the trees. It almost looks like a painting. The light is exquisite and the depth of field you achieved is most impressive. A stunningly beautiful photo. Congratulations.
abmdsudi (42540) 2013-05-15 20:02
The contrasty hut has made a strong focal point along with the canal lead into the expansive depth of the scenic landscape. Vividness of details and colors have lifted this shot tremendously. I love the efficient framing, viewpoint and superb clarity, a brilliant that looks so pleasing with your exquisite work. Flawless capture, well done. TFS

This canal is a great place for photos and here you included this little white house that stands out so well. The canal seems endless! Very good dof! I also like the composition, light and colours!

josepmarin (57711) 2013-06-03 4:44
I like the spring colors and the great light you have achieved in this good shot.
There are a splendid and deep perspective of the trees and of the canal, which leads our eyes towards the fugue point in the horizon, and I love the inclusion of this nice white construction in foreground.
A good informative note, too.
jacquest (18559) 2013-06-06 12:57
mjw364 (7338) 2013-06-08 8:24
I like the way that the building in the FG provides a feeling of a two dimensional flattened perspective but this is then betrayed by the lines of the canal and trees that create the depth. In some ways a graphical shot with shapes clearly evident. It reminds me of the kind of shot JHM would take.
mcmtanyel (12427) 2013-06-09 20:12
I like the perspective, the colors and the pretty scenery. But those are not what attracted me to this photo. It is your unique POV that has somehow managed to place that hut just at the right spot so that it does not become an obstruction. Very well done!
PS - I was somewhat familiar with the tradition you described in your critique. I taught at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA for 8 years. That area is a pocket of Dutch-Americans and I have been exposed to some traditions they continue to observe.
PPS - You are right, that photo has some noise. I believe I was using 400 ASA film, which was a bit granular.
Hansaphotos (6627) 2013-06-10 13:34
A well composed shot from this bautiful place. A wonderful JHM-style of shot with great perspective. The building in the corner is a nice addition. Very nice work! TFS. Have a nice week.
macjake (55504) 2013-06-11 23:19
again, this looks so similar to the photo's we see JHM take :)
looking at this, i can't help but wonder how long this line of trees goes on for!
its an excellent view point, and seeing the white shack really brightens it up nicely.
a well executed shot Paul
Angshu (55375) 2013-06-12 0:47
I though this is your countryman - jhm proprietory POV ;-)
A fine use of the canal as perspective with the line of trees. The blue of the water & sky is very attractive. What I like as well is how the house in the FG pivots the shot...
nikkitta (14582) 2013-06-15 12:26
What can I say of interesting after so many comments?
Like the colors ( well saturated) with great contrast
Like the perspective given by the canal
Like the POV and composition
Well done, have a great week end
UlfE (14641) 2013-07-31 9:32
Excellent composition and perspective. I really like how you make use of the lines and the postioning of the house could not have been better. You also make very good use of the strong spring lighting. TFS and have a nice evening!
jmdias (54499) 2013-08-26 17:29
I recognize the place from the images took by john. it is difficult to take a different image of this place after to see so many samples shown by him. anyway I want to say your image is different and the inclusion of the small house is one of the reasons. excellent quality. TFS.
kato (11630) 2013-10-03 19:37
You're capturing well this place by a good angle, a good perspective and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the calm canal extended straightly and trees which stand in a row on both sides at a line. The whole is balanced well by a good arrangement and beautiful color combination. And, the hut at the right draws out a good impact in this image.
elenimavrandoni (14249) 2014-07-15 11:24
Paul, a very lovely composition taken with a great sense of depth and perspective, I like the contrast and the point of view!
a relaxed and enjoyable postcard!!
they say that the best month to visit Brazil is the month of August because this is the first spring month there..I'm about to leave this country now and I guess that I have to come back for more...
