Many eloquent words are being spoken about the life of Nelson Mandela today and I cannot begin to match those. I will simply show a picture taken in 2005 of a cell that he was imprisoned in from 1964-1982 on Robben Island. He was often in solitary confinement. A brave, extraordinary and inspirational man who will be very much missed by the South African and many other people.

A poignant tribute to this GREAT man!
I saw recently a film "Mandela a long way to freedom" and some years ago "Invictus".

Hi dear Ann. A sobering photo which in its starkness reveals a system that tried to crush a noble soul with such cruelty and disregard for his humanity. yet he rose from this putrid cycle of hate and like a gloriously bright phoenix he taught us all about the healing power of forgiveness, compassion and love. It is a pity that around the world with wars raging, his example is lost on many. It is a moving image that you have posted but one should not be bitter about all those years he suffered, as he himself was not bitter. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Ann ,
Un cliché simple , mais qui pourrait être insensible à ce lieu historique ! Et surtout , c'est par ce cliché que j'apprends la mort de Nelson Mandela .
2mouvant témoignage .

How wonderful, at this time of mourning for a great man, that you have managed to find this photograph from your archives of eight years ago.
The simplicity of content and the simplicity of composition give this picture great impact and the dull colours and tones reinforce feelings of loneliness and misery in this grim cell.
Despite having been taken with a much more basic camera than your present one, you have maanged the low light here extremely well - ISO 400 would have been risking "noise" with that camera and 1/15 second exposure handheld is a tribute to your steady hand.
A most appropriate upload at this sad time.

I was immediately attracted by the simplicity of the image when I saw it as a thumbnail. I was even more impressed when I clicked on it and found that it was a tribute to this great man. Your thoughts for him have been well-presented here.

a shot that really does not need any real explanation and a wonderfully fitting tribute to the passing of a great man. His humility, compassion and insight is a lasting legacy, not just for South Africa, but also a lesson for all of the world to embrace.
Have a great weekend - B.

Hello Ann - A stark reminder of the passion with which Mandela pursued his dream .... he knew that this was possibly the best he could expect for his stand, the worst being death, and yet he wavered not. The passing of a truly humble man has touched the world. Would that there were other men with his qualities. A sad day and a fitting memorial. Warm regards Rosemary

A very good tribute to this important leader. Also a very good picture with these simple geometric lines.

The simplicity of the cell is depressing, but the straight lines, few details and plain colours made a good composition possible. The light is surprisingly good, whether it's because of your photographic skills or a leftover from the enlightened man spending so many years here.

A simple shot which brings home the austerity that Nelson Mandela suffered.
He was a remarkable man.
He did so much good for his country and set a precedent for others to follow. It is hard to talk about him without feeling the sense of loss.
My warm regards,

The simplicity of the photo provides description as eloquent as a thousand words. Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary man, cut from the same cloth as Mahatma Gandhi. Social reformers and statesmen of this level come along so rarely. Thank you for sharing this genuinely effective photo.
Have a good weekend,

Hello Ann ,
A nice tribute to a unique man who was true to his convictions and a good and honest politician, a rarity these days! The stark and minimalist composition works well here. The green and chocolate color combination is unusual. Tfs!
