Photographer's Note

The view from High Point Restaurant in Coal Center, Pennsylvania, at an elevation of 247 m (810 ft) above the winding Monongahela River. Minuscule coal and steel mill towns, each featuring immigrants from a single European nationality — Irish, Slovak, Czech, Polish, Italian... line the shores, and from this elevation appear like miniature villages. Tugboats frequently pushing six or seven coal-filled barges negotiate the tight bends in the river, even passing each other on the way. The flowering plants add color highlight in the panoramic image created by stitching four photos shot in vertical format.

I was in the town of California, Pennsylvania, home to the California University of Pennsylvania, CalU, to give a pair of talks. I had been lured initially by a chance to see Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, "Fallingwater". It was a pleasant surprise to see a dynamic and happy student body, exuding enthusiasm and hospitality.
