Brighton beach houses, or bathing boxes, give life & colour to the otherwise uninteresting Brighton Beach in Victoria. They are known to be one of the more famous landmarks of Melbourne, they attract International visitors every day of the year. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. Brighton is located in the City of Bayside, which has 17 km of foreshore to Port Phillip Bay. Nestled on Dendy Street Beach, the Brighton bathing boxes are a popular Bayside icon and cultural asset.Bathing boxes and boatsheds are intrinsic to Port Phillip Bay and Western Port. Much has been written about Victorian morality and its impact on how people went about bathing and enjoying the seashore. As a result of this morality bathing boxes had their origins not only in Australia but concurrently on the beaches of England, France and Italy. European bathing boxes exist to this day.
The 82 Brighton bathing boxes are unique because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment and a Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay on a beach owned by Bayside City Council. As simple structures, all retain classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes. No service amenities such as electricity or water are connected. Although approximately 1,860 bathing boxes, boatsheds and similar structures are located around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, the Brighton bathing boxes are the only remaining structures of their kind close to the Melbourne central business district.
As a functional remnant of a bygone era, they provide a cultural and historical resource that is constantly being photographed, painted or drawn. Licensees choose to differentiate their bathing boxes with minor structural, artistic and colour variations. When viewed together they turn the beachscape into a collective work of art that can change by the hour according to season, light and colours.

this is a great colourful and playful image. I suspect you that you have bought the handbag to fit in the image.

I didn't realise Alfred was such a snappy dresser, I think the black ensemble accessorized with the white shoes and yellow handbag gives us a good insight into his feminine side, and that pose, a true Metrosexual. ha, ha, ha !!!
Nicely composed, the diminishing row of colourful beach huts gives excellent depth, the placement of the couple balances the scene well.
Not a shadow in sight, another typical summer's day in Melbourne eh. :))

Ciao Santo. Very fine work- great perspective, excellent contrasts in light and dark and dramatic colours.I like the device used where the two admirers of the boxes guide our gaze along the colourful lineup. Regards. Klaudio.

That is the best thing about an overcast day in Melbourne for a great photo like this one, absolutely no harsh shadows, only stunning clarity of colours and details. Brilliant composition with those colourful background and the yellow bag goes well with it. Another first classed street life photo. Well, beach photo.
Hey, I want to see the crappy original file...hahaha

Hello Sinto, i love those colors and the result from your perspective and the subjects. This carrying of girl's bag is very much like a tradition in my country among teenagers to try and win the heart of the girl, this is like the first base for boys. Beautiful shot. Regards, Alex

She has obviously found an appealing motif in the colourful, repeating beach houses..!
And the man is at her service, half a step behind...
The second photographer got a nice motif too - with the couple in addition to the rest...!
Longroute (19392) 2010-03-05 1:14
This long row of colourful bathing boxes (I thought you called them "cabins" in English...) really deserves a close attention. You chose to priviledge the depth perspective here enhanced by that opportune couple which adds colour and vivacity. The red kite in the sky is another fine focal point: quite a well balanced composition. I guess you didn't stopped there and took some close up view which I'm expecting to see next time...
By the way, there were hundreds of those beach houses here too, in our "city" beach. They were bigger than these seen here, with verandas or balcony too, real architectonic jewels, probably dating at the beginning of 1900, and costantly repaired when whe wood was rotten. It was a joy to see them and they stopped the beach erosion. Ten years ago or so, an idiot of a mayor decided to smash them down...
Thanks for this fine document and your interesting note,

Ciao Caro Santo, nice man-bag. Is that Bill and his chicky-babe making a comeback to Melbourne? The light here is wonderful (especially given your notorious weather :) The image is lovely and sharp and the depth really good, each and every one of those beach cabin are so strongly coloured and vibrant. Great job, TFS and I wish you a beautiful weekend, Lisa

Buonasera sig. Girotto,

I like that ... I love the guy wears a woman bag;) Cool scene, very good quality, vivid colors.
holmertz (33523) 2010-03-05 14:29
An amazingly colourful and attractive photo. No doubt it's the dark sky that makes the colours so strong and and at the same time so soft. The yellow sand is a perfect complement to the threatening clouds. Whether you waited for someone to stand in that place, or asked that couple for assistance, they make an ideal foreground.

Great composition with the line of colorful houses matching the red parachute and the yellow bag. Very good work. Congratulations!
mafegan (8622) 2010-03-07 4:29
A different way to show the Brighton Beach houses. The young couple obliged by standing in a position to balance the red kite. I am wondering how this area survived yesterday? Cheers, Marlene

Firstly, I must tell Peter Wall that he was right, that was most likely Alfred because among all of us, we all know his immediate reaction when he sees a pretty girl, he will tag and follow her all the way to get portraits, email and telephone contact number. He has not been able to stop doing that since 2007.
Secondly to Lisa : no, all my 12 days in Australia were in the presence of supervisors when I took portraits of girls. Never had I ask for a single phone number or email.
Thirdly, that was not me, definitely my visa was denied for 2nd trip. I dont go to Brighton Beach no more. Maybe in Sydney I might try in presence of Peter Wall and Lisa.
Finally, we all know Alfred is restricted for obvious reasons that he cannot pose any girl portraits online, he lost his freedom longgggg ago. Reason is known and unsaid here.
About Santo's photo. It looks like a better day than when I was there, windy and deserted, ok there was a pair of tourists but we failed to get good photos then, at least for me. The good part here is the kite.
And maybe Peter was still right, Melbourne sky is no blue! Sunshine up the coast :)
s_lush (16128) 2010-03-07 21:52
These bathing boxes really look very nice and colorful. As your shot shows they are very attractive for tourists and photographers. The composition, with the couple in the foreground, the colorful kite in the foreground and the multicolored boxes in the middle, is very well balanced. The scene is extremely bright and colorful despite the dull weather at the moment of capturing. Excellent job!

The term “whipped” springs to mind!
Nice catch, excellent colours and detail. Well timed also.
Have a good week, Paul.
Kielia (21953) 2010-03-12 8:19
a very strong composition with a great perspective, you have perfectly realized the artistic potential of the bathing boxes! What I also like is the amazing contrast of the colors. Excellent photo work! I also enjoyed reading your nice note and the comments!
batalay (33891) 2010-04-02 4:03
A superb composition with an artist's palette of colors neatly arranged before the brush begins to mix them. You clearly have a painterly eye (the Italian gene), but then you can take the Italian out of Italy, but you can't take the Italian out of the Italian!
Warm regards. (I could be in the position of this man, and I have been many times. Except that I wield the camera.) Yesterday in critiquing that superb B&W portrait you submitted of the poetry reader, I had lost track of my allotted number of daily critiques.

Clever and colourful.
I love the framework.
hemantbuch (1649) 2010-08-09 9:12
This is an exceptional picture. I love the colours of the bathing boxes and the yellow of the lady's bag makes the scene even more striking. Superb sharpness and composition.
