On my last day in Barcelona my flight was at 9.15 p.m. so I had a day of just wandering around camera in hand, having left my luggage with my very kind and friendly guest house owner.
I was down in the Barri Gotic (Gothic quarter) just walking aimlessly and kept stumbling across little squares, which all had some form of public artwork in them. This celebration of art and sculpture in all areas of Barcelona - rich and poor alike - is really part of the cultural heartbeat of the city. Or at least that's how it seemed to me. The celebration of art is in some ways, what makes Barcelona quite unique - there is a real passion for it everywhere from the many, many museums to the run down squares with sculptures such as this one.
As you can see the ladies were doing lunch here making this sculpture part of their everyday life and routine. What better way to celebrate art than through meeting there and engaging in the life affirming activity of eating great takeaway Spanish food!

what a fantastic looking scene this is! wow, never seen this subject from Barcelona before, i wonder why.the achitecturein the bg looks amazingly old and rustic, and the entire scene has a strong monochrome look to it.

a different shot of this great City, but one that is just as compelling and imaginative. Love the light and almost B&W effect here, it works beautifully, creating an ambience and subtle character to the image. Clever and original imagery!
Enjoy the weekend - Brian.

une scène de rue intéressante où l'art sert d'abri pour l'instant du lunch,c'est bien vu!
Le dessin de l'ombre au sol crée un graphisme agréable.

The colors in this are really outstanding, its look is so unusual, and it reminds me of a scene perhaps from the 1960's. As you say, what better way to enjoy art than to make it part of your everyday life. Certainly much better than having it behind velvet ropes or glass where it becomes something other than enjoyable. This is really nicely done, cheers!
All the best

What, a street shot with people in it?! You've been holding out on us, Mike ;)
Super, super shot -- I love what you've done here. Not only are the Barcelonans incorporating art into their everyday lives, you are making art of them doing it.
Very nice monochromatic tones with appealing touches of the warmer browns and rusts. And that nice trio in the foreground choosing the sidewalk over the distant tables, and in so doing becoming one with the art and its shadow.

a nice one. Great treatment with colours. Nice graphical textures everywhere and 3 ladies are there taking their lunch. Excellent work. Tfs.

Hello Mike - Another really creative shot and a real pleasure to see. To my eyes this one and your previous shot are amongst the best you have posted and show an individuality in the way you see, capture and create. Excellent PP work again. Enjoy your weekend. Rosemary

I like this image very much for its originality as far as composition, light management and chromatic treatment are concerned. It's really intriguing that you've combined these creative features with a daily life scene. The work of art is difficult to interpret but the three girls don't mind that and have integrated it to their daily experience. I like how the sculpture that hosts the girls is taller than the building in your composition. The whole of the background is interesting and delightful to watch. I also like the light underneath the "ball" and the selective rendering of warm tones that create a lovely familiarity in the monochrome setting. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

I like the scene a lot due to an amazing combination of people, superb architecture of the Barri Gotic, unique cold tonality of the image and fantastic composition you achieved. Very eye-catching daily life scene! TFS.

barri gothic? i've been there, got lost as well, but missed this statue. a unique share from the famous city. partial desat gave a different feeling. it actually goes well with the graphism emphasis you usually choose to show and can give nice results to most of your photos.

This is an interesting combination of people, art and architecture from a lesser known part of Barcelona. I also like the very desaturated colours you have chosen.

Lovely combination of daily life, Spanish architecture, and artwork. I like the shapes of the shadows in front of the women, and the way they used this interesting object as a backrest. It's always great to stumble across unique city scene such as this one.

I don't remember seeing this!
You have obviously explored the area really well!
What I love about this, is how the shadow continues the sculpture, on the pavement, encircling the girls and making them part of the whole.
A wonderful, very monochrome. exceedingly well composed, shot.
Have a great week,

The three young ladies against the statue, make no care and eat quiet on the marketplace.
Nice architecture in background with these big façade.
But you did wonderful done, and create depth and perspective.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

How I love Barcelona for all the reasons that you give. This informal group of 'ladies that lunch' really add some vitality to the sculpture. Also a lovely juxtaposition with those paying more to sit in the cafe chairs. This image is a super mixture of great street photography and creative processing - excellent.
Kind Regards, Ann
p.s. I will e-mail you with promised details

This looks great kind of black and white with lovely details of the sculpture.I appreciate the presence of the three girls sitting under the tower in strong sunlights. You did your job pretty well and thanks for showing it to us.

I like this photograph of the Barri Gotic, an area I well remember visiting a few years ago. It's important that you've included the figures (as your title indicates): they are the beating heart of the city at least as much as the interesting sculptures/installations like the one in the picture. I'm less enthusiastic about your use of selective desaturation: I'm wondering why you did it, what it may add to the photograph, and whether it's not become a digital cliché...
