Photographer's Note

This is the Syrian section of the Golan Heights with Palestine at far left and Umm Qais in Irbid province of Jordan in the fg. Although it looks far away, it was still close enough to hear Russian jets bombing Islamic State (Isis) targets at night. As you can see there are no thunderstorm clouds and the stars were out later in the night. What I first thought was thunder were bombs exploding. Plus there was no lightning.

The prickly pear plant at right is native to South America but thrives in the arid conditions of the Middle East. The Yarmouk River below the speckled peaks on the horizon forms the border between Jordan & Syria. Or in this instance, hopefully for not much longer, the ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq & Levant).
