This photo was taken in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. One of the poorest regions, but also richest in culture. I was just outside of the town of Chamula not far from San Cristobal de las casas. The photo was taken in slide fortmat and I do not have any other specifics.
The families in this area are part of a farming coop. The girl turned and noticed me right while I was taking the picture. Initially she seemed a little undecided if she wanted her picture taken and I believe the essence of that thought is captured on film.
I am always extremely cautious when taking photographs of indigenous cultures. After I spent several minutes talking with her she was very at ease. Mexico is one of my favorite countries because I feel the people are extremely friendly and welcoming. |
