This is the same fellow I posted yesterday, I've never had one of these fellows fly towards me. I had a hard time choosing between this one and the one posted. What do you think? Most bird photos I get, the bird is flying away. So that's why I chose this one inspite of the motion blur.
Today I was again walking along the estuary when an employee commented on its beauty. I asked if the estuary would survive the marina and he said sadly, "I don't know."

Very nice catch with good selective setting on the bird who contrast well with the background.
ciec (1081) 2007-01-15 13:58
This one, for sure !
The other is just 'normal'

This one is by far the best. Lovely action and colors and perfect composition. I like it a lot and I think to myself - this wouldn't be as beautiful if the bird had 100 % sharpness. Perfect. TFS. Regards Jens

Very nice chance photo with the fine details the fantastic wing-span and the beautiful muted background that compliments the white plumage.
Gerrit (43763) 2007-01-16 4:12
very good catch with the light through the wings and such a lot of details visble.
ribeiroantonio (22631) 2007-01-16 4:29
For me, this picture was the best choice. The other one is also excellent but this here is very dynamic with the bird taking off for a new “adventure”. I love it. The blur works to perfection to give the sense of motion. Well done Pat.

Perfect timing Pat and well placed in the frame despite having to shoot in a hurry. The darkness in the background is a perfect contrast to the white bird.
The Ws is good too but as you rightly decided it hasn't got the dynamism of the action shot. Also in the WS it would have been better if you had lowered the camera a touch to include the whole of his reflection. Nice work.

well caught, lovely bird during take off, light is so perfect to have a beautiful result.

I guess I am just piling on here agreeing that this is the one .. despite the motion blur it is just so beautiful .. and so incredibly well composed .. especially for such a quick moment.
wonderful image ..

An outstanding capture that demonstrates that good photographers also have to be opportunists and seize the moment. This one wins hands down over the WS version, not only because of the drama of the bird in flight but also the lovely background of slightly blurred smooth water and reflections. Very impressive, Pat. Its a keeper.
pboehringer (770) 2007-01-16 22:43
Spetacular panning effect, Pat. The position of the bird in your composition is just right on target. You got really lucky to have this black background. It contrasts so well with the white feathers. What an elegance!
You should have used the WS also as an main post.

Hi Pat. Great photo. I don’t think the motion blur is such that it detracts from this photo. In fact I think this is a very dynamic image with the motion blur and the stance of the bird. Great composition also with just enough light on the water to let you know what is going on. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.

I can see your dilemna in posting, but I think you've gone for the right one as it's more dramatic. It's certainly well captured at just the right moment as it fits into the frame well - it has space to fly into. Not an easy shot, so well done.

Hi Pat. I have tried a few such photos 3 years ago in Florida, but as I didn't have a DSLR then it was more ore less pointless. This one of yours however turned out very well, I think. You get a good sense of motion, and at the same time the photo retains a fair amount of detail in the bird's plumage and its elegant pose. You've also been lucky with the natural surroundings in that they do not overlap or include a distracting feature in the background. The WS is nice too, with the special add of the bird's reflection.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2007-01-19 5:23
you have done here a wonderfull picture. The sharpness and the light are amazing, but not only. The mouvement of the bird is so elegant.
cunejo200 (7281) 2007-01-19 16:38
This and the one you included in your WS are worthy of individual posting. But I prefer this one. Wonderful sharpness and nice bokeh. Regards. Danilo

This is a beautiful image, the proof simplicity rules!
Very well composed of course, and with gread details in the bird...

The timing is perfect. I would definitely favour this one over the other one. The timing is perfect & the slight blur of motion makes it exciting in the backdrop of the dark waters. This is for sure a difficult shot to manage & you've done so well
xuaxo (6830) 2007-01-25 12:26
Here it is! I like it. And I prefer this.
I guess they are constructing too much marinas, also in Portugal.
