Photographer’s Note
Another in my series of Merida walls. This time not colourful, not complex, almost utterly spare.
This wall -- behind which there is nothing but an overgrown patch of saplings and weeds -- is part of a ruined structure on the grounds of the Casa de la Christiandad, once a retreat for monks and nuns, now an historical site maintained by an old couple who keep a cow and some turkeys in the adjacent field. Most of the building is well-mainted, majestic, and obviously beautiful, but I was attracted to this odd bit of unreadable mystery.
What was it? I don't know. Why have stones been put into the holes? I don't know. It resembles an old computer punch card, a pueblo cliff dwelling... something from another time, bearing a meaning that's no longer legible.
Or maybe it means nothing. Just an old wall and some kids at play, sticking rocks into holes.
