Photographer’s Note

Several Indian villages are located at ten kilometers of San Cristobal of mow Casas, of which San Juan Chamula. Its inhabitants, of language tzotzile, are descendants of the Maya.
The church of the village has a very coloured gate. At the interior, the atmosphere is seizing: Indians, knelt a little everywhere in the nave, request. They stuck candles on the ground, in front of the statues which decorate the nave. The ground is covered with pine needles. Known to be the object of a great religious enthusiasm but also its single cultuelles practices,
the church of San Juan is the most significant place for the very whole community. Only regret; the photographs are in this place as at the time of any religious ceremony with San Juan- STRICTLY prohibited. Any attempt would expose you instantaneously to a violent reaction of the Indians whose beliefs indicate to them that the camera is a robber of hearts…
