This is the east side of the Palace. Construction technology is evident with the frieze. The body of Puuc structures consists of a mass of rubble and mortar. To this is added facing stones that have been accurately sized, smoothly finished, and then carefully fitted together. In section, they are very thin, forming a veneer that adheres to the surface of the wall. Mosaic elements are independently carved to create a variety of motifs. For the most part, the elements are standardized forms, created by minor craftsmen, and then carefully fixed in place.
