Photographer's Note

There are several stelae, all sheltered by palapas, at Sayil. While I photographed the two near the entrance, I could make out none of the detail. This one is located 125 metres southeast of the Watchtower. The Maya were very dependent on the fertility of the earth and the rains for their survival. They equated the male orgasm and ejaculate with that fertility. This stela depicts Yum Keep, the Maya god of the phallus and fertility.
