Photographer's Note

This giant head (a replica) is also from San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan (Veracruz). It was sculpted from basalt quarried from boulders on the volcanic Cerro Cintepec in the Tuxtla Mountains. As the crow flies, this would be a straightline distance of 80 kilometres to the north of San Lorenzo. Possibly, the material was first dragged to a stream where it would be placed on a large raft, floated down the coast and then up the Coatzacoalcos River, from whence again it was dragged up to the plateau for working. The monument was photographed at the archaeological park of Chankanaab Lagoon, Cozumel.
